Lifeguards treat 21 stingray injuries

Seal Beach lifeguars treated 26 stingray injuries this week, according to a Wednesday, Aug. 29, report by Seal Beach Marine Safety Chief Joe Bailey. The report, submitted to City Manager Jill Ingram, said lifeguards performed 41 rescues, four boat rescues and responded to 26 medical aid calls. Two of those calls were classified as major.

“We are expecting a crowded Labor Day weekend,” Baily wrote. “The warm weather and the expected large surf should bring large crowds to the beach.  We are expecting a busy time for Lifeguards.  The largest surf is expected on Saturday, slowly dropping during the weekend.”

The past week was also a busy one.

“The TV show ‘Lifeguard’ was on the beach last Saturday,” Bailey wrote. “They were able to capture Lifeguard Matt Maya rescue a fisherman on the Anaheim jetty that had fallen and broken his ankle.”

“Local schools are back in session and we are planning on winding down our staffing levels over the next couple of weeks.  We will continue to have full deployment on the next three weekends, with staffing levels down during the week,” Bailey wrote.
