Crime Log: Woman survives heroin overdose in Seal Beach

A woman suffered a heroin overdose on Saturday, June 23, according to Seal Beach Police Sgt. Steve Bowles.

He said the woman survived the overdose.

According to the dispatch log, police first received a 7:33 p.m. report of a person down on Pacific Coast Highway, somewhere near the Pavilions supermarket.

The caller, a woman, said the other woman was down and her lips were purple. The caller said the other woman had been seen walking, then collapsed. The caller told the dispatcher that the other woman might have suffered an overdose, but he gave no further information.

According to the log, the dispatcher was suspicious of the caller.

The dispatcher asked the caller for her name. She reportedly hesitated, then gave dispatch a different phone number from the one that appeared on the 911 screen. The line disconnected.

The victim was cited for using or being under the influence of a controlled substance and released at the hospital.

Monday, June 18

Transient—7:46 a.m.—405 Freeway and Seal Beach Boulevard—The caller reported seeing a woman panhandling. The woman had a sign and luggage. The woman flagged down Police unit 106. The officer apparently advised the woman to stop panhandling. According to the log, she got on a city bus and left.

Graffiti/Vandalism—8:01 a.m.—12th Street—The caller reported red graffiti on top of the sea wall between 12th Street and 13th Street. Report taken.

Trespassing—10:07 a.m.—Island View Drive—Police received a report of a possible burglary. The caller said an ex-friend was on her couch, having entered the residence without permission. Police unit M7 took a man into custody and booked him for trespassing.

Graffiti/Vandalism—11:45 a.m.—Pacific Coast Highway and San Gabriel River Bike Trail—The caller reported five individuals spray painting green paint on the bike path wall. Police unit 107 checked the bike path and was unable to locate the suspects. The log did not say if police located the graffiti.

Panhandling—2:33 p.m.—Main Street—The caller said a man who the  caller described as a transient was in front of the location, begging for money.

Injured Animal—3:06 p.m.—Seal Way—The caller said a sick pelican was on the boardwalk near Seal Way. Referred to Long Beach Animal Care Services.

Counterfeit Bill—5:25 p.m.—Pacific Coast Highway—A woman gave the caller a fake bill. The log did not say what denomination the counterfeit bill was. The manager spoke with the woman and a male companion. Report taken.

Tuesday, June 19

Found Property—3:14 p.m.—5th Street—The caller found a bag of white powder in a plastic bag. The caller believed the white powder might be an illegal drug. However, police determined that the caller had simply found trash. Police disposed of the trash.

Traffic Hazard—6:17 p.m.—Seal Beach Boulevard and Landing—The caller said a large black trailer was parked at the red curb on Seal Beach Boulevard, blocking visibility for traffic exiting Landing. At 8:16 p.m., the trailer was reported to have been moved south of the location. Matter solved.

Wednesday, June 20

Complaint—7:19 a.m.—Central Way and 6th Street—The caller said an unattached trailer was parked on the south side of the street. Police unit 441 found construction equipment being used by workers.

Bike—7:49 a.m.—8th Street—The caller said a bike had been locked to a tree by a cable for the past three weeks. The caller asked that Public Works cut the lock.

Found Property (Bike Part 2)—8:20 a.m.—8th Street—Police unit 107 reported that Public Works was present to cut off the bike that had been chained to a tree. Report taken.

Disturbance, Juveniles—12:59 p.m.—Avalon Drive—The caller said four juveniles were shooting BB guns. The juveniles were with an adult who was reportedly the father of at least one of the children. Police unit M7 counseled the four juveniles and the adult. The log described the man as the father. Counseled.

Extra Patrol Check Requested—3:07 p.m.—Seal Beach Boulevard—An individual came into the bank asking suspicious questions. The caller offered to phone police again once security got a picture of the suspect from the video camera. The name and address of the bank were blacked out in the log.

Malicious Mischief, Vehicle—4:11 p.m.—13th Street—The caller said a vehicle drove by and the occupants threw a bottle at the caller’s car, damaging it. The crime apparently occurred two hours earlier. Report taken.

Transient—10:54 p.m.—Seal Beach Boulevard—The caller said an individual who was described as a transient was sleeping in someone’s doorway. Police unit 207 arrested the man for public drunkenness.

Thursday, June 21

Suspicious Person—4:18 a.m.—Elder and Heather—The caller said a man who was not known to the area was riding a bike in the neighborhood. When the caller asked him what he was doing, he rode away.

Forgery—11:14 a.m.—Seal Beach Boulevard—An 84-year-old customer wanted to get a cashier’s check for $7,000 from her account while  a woman stood behind her. The caller believed that the suspect was directing the elderly woman to take the money out of the account and to say the money was for her granddaughter, but it wasn’t.

The caller suspected a third suspect was involved. Police went to the 84-year-old woman’s home. She wasn’t there. Police left a business card.

Patrol Check—11:34 a.m.—College Park Drive—The caller reported a woman sitting inside a car. The caller said there were 12 children playing in the park without adult supervision.

Municipal Code Violation Reported—4:50 p.m.—Pacific Coast Highway—A citizen reported second-hand information that a man was doing “body work” on cars in the parking lot.

Residential Burglary Report—9:45 p.m.—Ironwood Avenue—The crime apparently occurred between 6:45 a.m. and the time of the call to police. Point of entry: a broken side door. Police searched the residence. Report taken.

Disturbance, Noise—10:53 p.m.—Main Street—The caller said individuals on the back patio were being loud. The caller phoned again to report seeing two individuals in a van. The caller saw a lighter and came to the conclusion the occupants of the van might be smoking marijuana. Police unit 207 interviewed two individuals in the field.

Friday, June 22

Disturbance, Noise—4:01 a.m.—Electric Avenue and Main Street—The caller complained about two men being loud. Police unit 206 arrested one of them for public drunkenness and interviewed the other man in the field.

Dead Animal—7:35 a.m.—Ocean Avenue—The caller reported the remains of a shark on the north side of the Seal Beach Pier, south of the jetty. Public Works was notified.

Pedestrian Check—8:46 a.m.—Main Street and Pacific Coast highway—An individual was attempting to get money from the ATM at the location, but the individual had no ATM card nor did the individual have a bank account.

The individual was advised to leave the area.

Found Property—10:07 a.m.—13th Street—The caller said someone threw a back pack containing a wallet into the front seat of the van belonging to the caller’s painter. Police were unable to locate the owner, so the property was booked for safe keeping. Report taken.

Saturday, June 23

Animal Noise—11:16 a.m.—17th Street—The caller said a dog was in a white Lexus that had been there for at least two hours. The door was barking.

Animal Information—11:37 a.m.—Marlin Avenue—The caller said a dog charged a woman as she walked past a residence.

She apparently refused medical treatment, but she wanted the residents contacted and told that their dog was loose. Advised.

Suspicious Person—7:08 p.m.—Island View Drive—The caller said a man was loitering around a residence on Island View Drive. The caller thought he might try to break in. The suspect was gone when police arrived. Police checked the perimeter.

Police were unable to locate anyone inside the residence. The location appeared secure. However, a ladder was propped up against the house. Police checked on the roof.

Transient—1:34 p.m.—Main Street—The caller said the owner of a business was upset over a man who was described as a transient coming to the front of the business to ask people for money and scaring away her customers.

Animal Information—3:22 p.m.—Seal Beach Boulevard—The caller said a dog locked inside a Toyota Camry looked distressed. The car and the dog were gone by the time the police arrived.

Pelican—5:19 p.m.—Pacific Coast Highway—The caller reported an injured pelican to the side of the roadway. Referred to Long Beach Animal Care Services.
