Penny Lane won’t chase a three-peat victory

Penny Lane, the intrepid dachshund that won the last two Wienerschnitzel Wiener Nationals, will not run this year at the Los Alamitos Race Track for the event that raises funds for the Seal Beach Animal Care Center.

The beloved Penny Lane, who is owned by Trish Ausilio of Buena Park, is not expected to defend her title and try for a three-peat. She’s the only dog to win back-to-back crowns.

She also went on to capture the national title in San Diego and ride in the Holiday Bowl parade.

Fans will still get to see the popular pooch as she is scheduled to lead a post parade before one of the races.

The 17th annual Wienerschnitzel Wiener Nationals will be held at Los Alamitos Race Course on Saturday, July 14, this year, with proceeds to benefit the center that shelters and then finds homes for stray animals in the Orange County area.

The Wienerschnitzel Wiener National festivities will get underway at approximately 6 p.m. It will include a live horse racing program, featuring Los Alamitos’ top horses.

The Wiener Nationals Championship race will be held at approximately 9 p.m. With over 80 dachshunds competing in front of a packed house at Los Alamitos, a total of 10 trial heats will be contested at 50 yards with the winning wieners advancing to the championship race.

The participants are selected from hundreds of creative entries received. Participants will include pooches from the cities of Seal Beach, Cypress, Los Alamitos, Buena Park and all over Orange and Los Angeles County.

You can meet the stars and their trainers/owners on the grandstand area throughout this family night.

Since 1996, the Wienerschnitzel Wiener Nationals has helped raised over $200,000 for the Care Center. The Seal Beach Animal Care Center is selling tickets to the event with all proceeds going directly to the Seal Beach Animal Care Center.

Last year’s event raised $18,000 through ticket sales and T-shirt sales on the day of the event. For more information on the Care Center, call (562) 430-4993.

In addition, tickets can also be purchased on the day of the event at Los Alamitos Race Course on a first-come-first-seated basis. Admission at the track cost $3 for adults; children 17 and under are free. General parking is also free.
