Susan Pierce seeks help for African kids

Susan Pierce, seen left with kids from Jukumu Letu Daycare Center in Nairobi, Kenya in Africa last month.

Seal Beach resident Susan Pierce took the Sun Newspaper to Nairobi, Kenya, Africa last month to help Jukumu Letu Daycare Center, providing food and a safe place for children to stay while caregivers work.

You can feed a child for $8.55/mo or support a teacher’s monthly salary for $85.

With the help of friends and neighbors, local resident Susan Pierce was able to buy a 5000 liter water tank and have it installed with rainwater collection pipes.

She brought donations of drugs and first aid supplies. Tables and chairs were purchased for the children’s classrooms, new carpets for the kids and stools for the caregivers so they won’t have to sit on the floor.

A dental program was started for these children of the slums, who had never had a toothbrush before.

She took 100 pounds of yarn to the knitting group and started a t-shirt stenciling group. Susan worked in the office and helped set up a master daily schedule for each classroom.

She attended a Rotary Club meeting to get more Kenyans involved. These are just a few of the many things Susan was able to accomplish on this trip.

You still have the opportunity to help with this ongoing project! Susan will be returning in six months.

There are many ways to help. Donations still needed include cash, airline miles, building a U.S. Web site for the center, helping with 501C3 set up, medical supplies and more.
