Los Alamitos High’s boys basketball team brought home another tournament title after holding off Tustin High, 59-50, to win the Tustin Holiday Classic championship on Saturday at Tustin High. It was the third consecutive tournament title for the Griffins at the annual event.

The Griffins (14-3) held off a game Tillers squad, which was able to slow down the pace on the game and keep Los Alamitos from running away with the game.

Griffin junior forward Trent Minter had 21 points to lead the Griffins and was voted Tournament MVP. Juniors Wesley Trevino and Liam Gray each had 17 points and both were named to the All-Tournament Team.

Early in the fourth quarter, the Tillers had kept the game in reach as the Griffins were holding a 40-32 lead. But Minter hit a baseline three-pointer and after a defensive stop. Gray followed with a rebound and put-back to extend the lead to 45-32.

The Tillers refused to go away getting a couple of three pointers by Johnny Sagarino and John Villagrana. But they could get only as close as 51-43, when the Griffins got a baseline three-pointer from junior Jordan Taylor and driving layup from Minter to extend the lead to 56-43 with less than two minutes left.

The Griffins open up conference play today at 7 p.m. against Laguna Beach High.
