Crime Log: Mysterious smoke disturbs Leisure World residents

Late Thursday night, March 11, a report of smoke in a Leisure World unit resulted in the evacuation of a building on St. Andrews Drive. No one was hurt during the incident. The cause of the smoke is unknown.

The address was redacted (blacked out) in the crime log.

According to the Seal Beach Police Department log, local law enforcement received word of the smoke second-hand at 10:29 p.m.

A Leisure World resident reported smoke coming from the roof of her unit.

Her smoke alarm was going off.

The Orange County Fire Authority was en route.

Seal Beach officers responded. Police found there was smoke inside the residence.

The fire captain requested evacuation of the building.

Units started evacuating from the south end of the building.

At 11:13 p.m., unit 121 advised dispatch that the battalion chief said everyone could return to their units except for the unit in question.

At 11:32 p.m., the log said the building and the unit in question no longer required police service. The reason for the smoke was unknown.

Vandalism Report—7:34 a.m.—Main Street—Police received a report that a glass marquis was smashed. Police unit 113 was unable to locate the victim. The officer left a note.

Fraud Report—8:55 a.m.—Lampson Avenue—The caller reported the theft of a credit card and extensive charges against the card.

Thursday, March 11

Citizen Assist—9:38 a.m.—Pacific Coast Highway—The caller reported that the caller’s vehicle was hit by a shopping cart that was being used by a woman in her 60s.

The collision reportedly damaged the caller’s car. The woman refused to exchange information. The caller blocked her vehicle in. The woman walked away.  Police counselled the caller concerning civil issues.

Grand Theft Report—11:12 a.m.—Old Ranch Parkway—Loss: laptop. The crime apparently occurred between 7:45 a.m. and 8:15 a.m.

Public Works Information—6:55 a.m.—Ocean Avenue—While on service, a police unit observed a large pot hole in the alley that appeared would get bigger. Message left for public works.

Friday, March 12

Grand Theft Report—9:25 a.m.—Ocean Avenue—The crime apparently occurred between March 9 and the time of the call to police. Loss: glass artwork from the garage. The garage may have been unlocked. Report taken.

Attempted Burglary—1:34 p.m.—Ocean Avenue—According to the caller, someone cut the window screens at the location.

The caller said that whoever did it attempted to enter, but did not in fact get inside. No loss. The caller just wanted to make the police aware of the incident.

Hit and Run with Property Damage—8:16 p.m.—Beachcomber Drive and Sea Breeze Drive—Sgt. Steve Bowles, public information officer for the Seal Beach Police Department, confirmed that a man named Marco Franco was arrested for driving under the influence. According to Bowles, Franco apparently hit a parked car with his vehicle.

Burglary Report—11:58 p.m.—12th Street—Point of entry: window. Loss: a laptop, jewelry and a camera. The residential burglary apparently occurred between 7:30 p.m. and the time of the call to police.

Saturday, March 13

Vandalism Report—7:26 a.m.—Ocean Avenue—Tiles were thrown off the roof of a business and a beach bathroom during the night. The caller said it looked as though someone had also gone through a trash bin. No report desired.

Bike Path—8:22 a.m.—Beverly Manor Road and Seal Beach Boulevard—While on service, police unit 111 contacted an individual described as a transient on the San Gabriel River Bike Trail. The individual was advised about being on the bike path.

Animal Detained—9:57 a.m.—Ocean Avenue—A small dog, possibly bleeding, was found and detained. Referred to Long Beach Animal Care Services.

Bike—4:31 p.m.—Marvista Avenue—The caller’s bike was apparently stolen at 5 p.m., Saturday, March 13. The bike was valued at $592.62. Report taken.

Monday, March 11

Smoke—12:30 p.m.—Interlachen Road, Mutual Unknown—A citizen reported second hand information that someone could smell smoke coming from the location. The Orange County Fire Authority was en  route. At 12:36 p.m., the log noted that there was a burned egg on the stove. No one was home. Message delivered to Orange County Fire Authority.

Theft Report—2:09 p.m.—Alderwood Lane, Mutual Unknown—An unknown suspect charged $225 on the caller’s credit card.

Friday, March 12

Trespassing—1:26 a.m.—El Dorado Drive, Mutual Unknown—Leisure World Security advised that someone was at the residence who had been advised against trespassing three weeks earlier.

Police unit 121 contacted the individual, who was described as cooperative.

The individual was advised about his behavior and left.

IN LOS ALAMITOS

Monday, March 15

Fight—1:37 a.m.—Los Alamitos Boulevard—A man and woman were reportedly hitting one another. Officers spoke with both of them, found no evidence of a crime and sent the pair home.

Tuesday, March 16

Disturbance Family—10:16 p.m.—Chestnut Street—The caller said someone behind her apartment was calling for help. Officers found a verbal disagreement between a father and son and provided counseling.

Wednesday, March 17

Transient—4:32 p.m.—Howard Avenue—An individual who was described as intoxicated knocked on doors, demanding to be let in. The caller didn’t know him. Officers spoke with the elderly man, who simply had the wrong residence.

Thursday, March 18

Disturbance—4:40 p.m.—Katella Avenue—An individual threw water in the caller’s face. Officers spoke with the pair and everything checked out okay.

Friday, March 19

Family Disturbance—12:50 p.m.—Farquhar Avenue—The caller said her son was tearing up the house. Counseled.

Saturday, March 20

Citizen Assist—1 p.m.—Katella Avenue—A man was stretched out on the grass with his shorts pulled up high so high that the shorts resembled a Speedo. The man said he was sunbathing in his shorts. Everything checked out okay.

Sunday, March 21

Keep the Peace—12:56 p.m.—Walnut Street — An individual wanted to return keys to an ex-roommate. Officers provided assistance.

Tuesday, March 16

Disturbance, Music or Party—9:24 p.m.—Oak Knoll Drive—Deputies contacted the host of the party and warned the host to turn down the music.

Wednesday, March 17

Suspicious Vehicle—1:17 a.m.—Chianti Drive—The vehicle was stopped and determined to be the milkman making deliveries.

Vandalism in Progress—3:30 a.m.—Channing Way—The caller’s intervention apparently thwarted the vandalism. Deputies checked the area but were unable to locate a suspect.

Suspicious Vehicle—12:27 a.m.—Piedmont Avenue and Wembley Road—The people in the vehicle were briefly detained, but deputies determined they were not engaged in suspicious activities.

Thursday, March 18

Battery Report—1:52 p.m.—Los Alamitos Boulevard—The battery apparently occurred the night before at the Sportsman Bar. No report desired.

Friday, March 19

Suspicious Person in Vehicle—8:38 a.m.—Martha Ann Drive and Bostonian Drive—The driver was detained and the vehicle searched. Deputies found no evidence of criminal activity and the driver was released.

Suspicious Person or Circumstances—8:54 p.m.—Hedwig Road and Pemberton Road—Parents were hosting a birthday party at the park. Nothing suspicious.

Suspicious Vehicle—11 p.m.—Yellowtail Drive—The vehicle was stopped, but nothing suspicious was noted.

Suspicious Vehicle—11:26 p.m.—Wembley Road and Piedmont Avenue—The driver was detained and the vehicle searched. Deputies found no evidence of criminal activity and the driver was released.

Wednesday, March 17

Suspicious Person in Vehicle—6:50 p.m.—N. Pacific Avenue and 10th Street—This turned out to be a news van that was legally parked. Nothing suspicious noted.

Friday, March 19

Disturbance, Music or Party—8:30 p.m.—25th Street—The party host was advised to turn down the music.

Sunday, March 21

Disturbance, Music or Party—3:34 a.m.—6th Street—: Deputies warned the party host about the noise.

Disturbance, Music or Party—2:55 a.m.—6th Street—This was a second response to the same party.

The host was cited for causing a disturbance.
