Crime Log: Los Al road rage trial continues

The jury trial is scheduled to continue on Jan. 23 in the case of a man accused of using his vehicle to strike another vehicle multiple times in Los Alamitos.

The incident occurred in November 2011. According to the Orange County Superior Court website, Robert Allen Barnhart has been charged with nine counts of assault with a deadly weapon (his car) and two counts of making criminal threats. Barnhart has pleaded not guilting to all 11 felony counts.

Monday, December 31

Theft—9:43 a.m.—Fern Circle—Someone used a citizen’s debit card to make a purchase of $84.65. Report taken.

Petty Theft Report—3:27 p.m.—Almond Avenue—The caller said someone stole an air compressor, valued at $60, between 6 and 7 a.m. Report taken.

Tuesday, January 1

Suspicious Occupied Vehicle—7:29 a.m.—Sea Breeze and Beachcomber—The caller said an individual was sleeping inside a car with the engine running. Police unit 141 arrested a man for public drunkenness.

Petty Theft—11:34 a.m.—B Row, Surfside Colony—The caller’s paddle board, valued at $500, was stolen from the caller’s front yard by an unknown suspect between 4:30 a.m. and the time of the call to police.

Fireworks—7:02 p.m.—B Row, Surfside Colony—The caller said fireworks were being set off near the playground right across from the security guard shack. The officer in police unit 242  spoke to a group on the beach. They said two juveniles set off the fireworks. Police unit 242 was unable to locate the juveniles.

Wednesday, January 2

Suspicious Person—1:12 p.m.—Ironwood Road—The caller said there were three suspicious men on the property, cleaning windows in the front yard and the slider off the backyard. The caller had just confirmed with the landlord that no one was expected to be there for that purpose. The caller believed the men did not know anyone was home. The landlord was en route. It turned out the three men were with a pest control service, spraying for fleas.

Disturbance, Juveniles—7:37 p.m.—Seal Beach Boulevard—The caller said two juveniles who were skateboarding behind the business refused to leave. However, they were gone by the time police unit 242 arrived.

Thursday, January 3

Suspected DUI—12:17 a.m.—Bolsa and Pacific Coast Highway—The caller said a vehicle going northbound was either driving slowly, randomly breaking or swerving. The caller was following the vehicle in the caller’s own car. Police unit 207 determined that the individuals in the suspicious car were slowing down to look at freeway closure signs. No further police services were necessary.

Found Property—10:07 a.m.—Electric Avenue—The caller found a suitcase to the side of the caller’s residence. Report taken.

Grand Theft Report—11:01 a.m.—Beachcomber Drive—Approximately a week earlier, a citizen noticed that some of her jewelry, valued at $3,500, was missing. Report taken.

Suspicious Person—7:11 p.m.—Seal Beach Boulevard—The caller, a clerk, said someone was in the store, wearing the mask of a horse. The individual took the mask off, revealing that the individual was a woman. The woman did not say anything to anyone, she just walked around the store. There was no crime, it was just a suspicious circumstance.

Saturday, January 5

Vehicle Burglary—11:12 a.m.—Lampson Avenue—Point of entry: a broken left rear window. Loss: unknown. The crime apparently occurred between 9:30 and 11 a.m. Report taken.

Illegal Peddler Reported—3:23 p.m.—Beachcomber Drive—The caller said a man was soliciting for a drug counseling service. The caller didn’t think he had a permit. Police unit 107 contacted the man and he had a valid Seal Beach license. No further police services were necessary.

Sunday, January 6

Patrol Check Requested—2:34 p.m.—1st Street—The caller said four individuals were hitting unspecified items into the water. The caller said they had dogs off their leashes. The caller was concerned about litter in the water and the danger to the public posed by the unleashed dogs. Police unit 107 contacted the individuals and advised them to discontinue their behavior. They said they would comply.

Fake Money—9:54 p.m.—Main Street—The caller said a man tried to pass a fake $10 bill to her. The caller said he had tried the same thing in the past. She told him the bill was fake. He told her to keep it and walked out. Report taken.

Auto Theft Report—2:30 p.m.—St. Andrews Drive, Mutual Unknown—The crime apparently occured between 7 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 3, and noon, Friday, Jan. 4. Report taken.

911 Hang-up—4:55 p.m.—Golden Rain Road, Mutual Unknown—An elderly woman on the line said she was trying to get a medication refilled. She was referred to 411. Call canceled prior to the dispatch of a unit.

Counseling—5:15 p.m.—St. Andrews Drive, Mutual Unknown—A citizen’s mother was engaged to an individual who the citizen thought might be a “con” trying to steal the mother’s money. Counseled.

Friday, January 4

Suspicious Circumstances—2:20 a.m.—Claremore Lane—The caller reported hearing knocking on a door in a nearby town home and also heard movement like someone was moving something. The caller said it was about two houses over and had heard the noises about five minutes prior to the call. Patrol located a resident who had locked himself out of the house. Assisted.

Sunday, January 6

Prowler—9:14 p.m.—Kearsarge Avenue—The caller reported that a tall thin man was seen in their backyard. The individual had last been seen running west on Kearsarge and onto Bennington. The caller said the same individual had been seen at about 1 a.m. earlier that day by the caller’s vehicle. The caller said there was no damage or sign of a crime, but requested extra patrols because it seemed suspicious.

Wednesday, January 9

Counseling—5:14 p.m.—Farquhar Avenue—The caller reported that his neighbor almost hit the caller with his vehicle while the caller was walking his dog. The caller said this was the second time the neighbor had done it and also threatened the caller that the next time he would hit him with his car. Patrol was unable to locate the neighbor. The caller was counseled.

Suspicious Person or Circumstances—2:26 a.m.—Druid Lane—The caller said the doorbell just rang. A minute later, the alarm system started beeping and the side motion light went on.

Illegal Peddling—4:03 p.m.—Oak Way Drive and Rowena Drive—The caller said two men were collecting donations.

Suspicious Person or Circumstances—7:06 p.m.—Cortese Drive—The caller said a man who appeared to be drunk was soliciting.

Citizen Assist—12:53 p.m.—Montecito Road—The caller said a neighbor left his trash in the driveway and the wind was dispersing garbage throughout the neighborhood.

Burglary Report—5:45 p.m.—Yellowtail Drive—The caller said she was contacted by her alarm company and when she got home, the rear doors were open and the keypad was open with an invalid code.

Suspicious Person in Vehicle—7:10 p.m.—Mainway Drive and Silver Fox Road—The caller said one of the two men occupying a vehicle got out and urinated.
