Crime Log: Preliminary hearing set in Rossmoor jogger stabbing

A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for Jan. 31 for the man accused of stabbing a woman as she jogged through Rossmoor.

The purpose of a preliminary hearing is to determine if there is enough evidence to justify allowing a case to go to trial.

The victim, a 28-year-old woman, was stabbed at about 9:11 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 23, on the 3200 block of Bostonian Drive.

Defendant James Anthony Rivas, 18, of Rossmoor, pleaded not guilty on Nov. 5 to charges of attempted murder, attempted robbery and assault with a deadly weapon or force likely to produce great bodily harm. He has also been charged with “enhancements” that could result in him serving a longer sentence if he is convicted. One enhancement is for attempted premeditated murder two others are for inflicting great bodily harm.

Monday, January 7

Suspicious Circumstances—9:31 a.m.—Seal Beach Boulevard—The caller said that a customer who opened a bank account in December was now acting suspiciously. He was taking pictures in the branch and kept looking at a specific employee. The man had written something unspecified on the front door of the branch. The caller thought his behavior was suspicious. The man was not present at the time of the call to police. The log said that the bank employees would close his account, return his money and advise the man against returning to the bank. Log entry.

Fraud—10:03 a.m.—Hazelnut Avenue—Someone charged unknown amounts of money from the caller’s credit card account on Sunday, Jan. 6. Report taken.

Suspicious Person—5:39 p.m.—10th Street and Central Avenue—The caller said two men were on the roof of a residence that was under construction. The two men were working with copper metal. The caller was concerned because they did not have lights and had no tool belts. The caller did not know if they were construction workers or not. The caller was out of the area when the call was made to police.

Police unit 207 contacted the foreman for the construction project. They were finishing up for the day. Police unit 207 determined no further police services were necessary.

Wednesday, January 9

Dead Animal—7:27 a.m.—Lampson and Basswood—The caller reported a dead opossum on the westbound side of Lampson Avenue between Basswood and Seal Beach Boulevard. Referred to Long Beach Animal Care Services.

Injured Animal—8:03 a.m.—Westminster and Kitts—The caller reported a possible injured hawk before the traffic light between the westbound lanes on Westminster Avenue. Referred to Long Beach Animal Care Services.

Vehicle Burglary—8:49 a.m.—Beryl Cove Way—Point of entry: a tool jammed into the key hole. The crime apparently occurred between 7 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 8, and 8 a.m., Wednesday, Jan. 9. Loss: a laptop computer valued at $2,500. Report taken.

Suspicious Person—10:48 a.m.—Lampson Avenue—The caller said a man who appeared to be under the influence of drugs had been in and out of the building several times. The man was asked to leave, but refused. The caller said he was still in the parking lot. Police unit 106 spoke with the caller in person and learned that the man in question had driven off, going westbound on Lampson Avenue.

Found Property—11:14 a.m.—Ocean Avenue—The caller found a wallet on Ocean Avenue. Report taken.

Thursday, January 10

Possible Counterfeit Check—1:08 p.m.—Main Street—The caller said an individual tried to use a check to make purchases at the location. The caller said it was a fraudulent check. The suspect didn’t get any items. The check never cleared. The check was for $2,382.92. The caller was not sure if he wanted a report. In the end, however, police took a report.

Suspicious Person—1:53 p.m.—5th Street—The caller said two women were going door-to-door, asking if anyone speaks French. They were last seen going towards Ocean Avenue.

Injured Animal—10:26 p.m.—Seal Beach Boulevard—The caller reported an injured pelican in the middle of the southbound lanes. The caller turned the flashers on his or her vehicle in an attempt to prevent the bird from being hit by other cars. A second caller said the first caller’s car was creating a traffic hazard. Police left a message with Long Beach Animal Care Services. At 10:34 p.m., the pelican reportedly flew away. Police cancelled the call to animal control. Matter solved.

Friday, January 11

Disturbance—7:32 p.m.—Avalon Drive—The caller said there was a large crowd gathered at the entrance to Gum Grove Park. They arrived in five or six vehicles. At 7:35, the same caller phoned police again to report that the same individuals were seen running out of the park. The caller said there were 30 or 40 individuals. The caller said they were yelling, but the caller could not make out what they said. Police unit 207 observed juveniles in the area. The officer saw no crime, just juveniles in the area. Police unit 207 closed the park. The juveniles were last seen walking northbound on Catalina Avenue. They were apparently associated with a teenage party on Surf Place. By 7:45 p.m., they were all home. They had apparently been participating in a treasure hunt and had to make their way back to their church. Pastor counseled. No further police services were necessary.

Saturday, January 12

Identity Theft—3:28 p.m.—Old Ranch Road—Someone obtained credit cards with the caller’s personal information and used those cards to make charges. Report taken.

Sunday, January 13

Disturbance, Party—12:28 a.m.—14th Street—The caller wanted a loud party shut down. The caller said she did not want the police to contact her. The loud music was turned down.

Monday, January 14

Suspicious Circumstances—3:36 a.m.—Pine Street—The caller reported hearing noises for the past 30 minutes coming from the roof. The caller said it sounded like footsteps; however, it could have been an animal. The caller also said there was a constant banging, possibly from the vents on the roof. Patrol checked the house and found nothing suspicious.

Monday, January 14

Illegal Peddling—3:34 p.m.—Wembley Road—The caller said a man was going door-to-door selling unknown items.

Vandalism Report—4:37 p.m.—Copa De Oro Drive.

Burglary Report—8:39 p.m.—Loch Lomond Road—The caller came home and discovered the burglary, but had already walked through the house.

Tuesday, January 15

Suspicious Person or Circumstances—2:05 a.m.—Yellowtail Drive—The caller said an SUV had been parked out in front of the location with the lights on for 10 minutes.

Suspicious Person in Vehicle—1:11 p.m.—Silverwood Drive and Foster Road—The caller said a man who was possibly drinking was in a car near the elementary school.

Burglary Report—4:39 p.m.—Rowena Drive—The caller was gone for three hours. Then the caller came home to find a window had been pushed open. It was unknown if anyone was inside the residence.

Wednesday, January 16

Suspicious Person or Circumstances—5:43 p.m.—Martha Ann Drive and Shakespeare Drive—A deputy performed a patrol check for a solicitor who reportedly banged on a door aggressively.

Suspicious Person or Circumstances—7:56 p.m.—Donovan Road—The caller said a door-to-door solicitor became hostile when her husband refused what he was selling.

Thursday, January 17

Suspicious Person or Circumstances—4:01 a.m.—Quail Run Road—The caller said a man was smoking marijuana at a location that the caller believed should be vacant.

Burglary in Progress—8:55 p.m.—Wembley Road—The caller just got home and realized her home had been ransacked. She did not know if anyone was inside.

Suspicious Person or Circumstances—9:48 a.m.—Harrisburg Road—A man came up to the caller’s door and knocked. The caller didn’t answer. The man looked into the caller’s yard. The man left in a large truck with lettering on it that appeared to indicate the truck belonged to a landscaping service. The caller did not want contact with the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.

Friday, January 18

Disturbance—1:47 a.m.—Rowena Drive—A member of the caller’s family refused to leave. The caller said the individual was on drugs and appeared to be hallucinating.
