Seal Beach Kids Fun Run gets a logo

Work on the 2010 Seal Beach 5/10K Race is underway.

This years’ theme for the upcoming event on Saturday, April 10 will be “Surf, Sun and Run.”

Seen from left are Kianna Taverner, skateboard winner; Stephanie Frazier, Kalei Iwami, grand prize winner, Shelby Samuelson, Harbour Surfboards gift certificate winner and Michelle Samuelson.

“The committee chose the theme for its representation of the elements they feel best exemplify the race and Seal Beach,” said Elizabeth Kane, chair of he Seal Beach 5K-10/K Committee. “Race day has always had a special place for kids and that place is the Kid’s 1K Fun Run and Fun Zone.”

On Wednesday, Jan. 27, awards were made at McGaugh School for the winners of the 2010 Kid’s Fun Run T-Shirt design contest.

The contest was started eight years ago and gives the local elementary children a chance to participate more in the Kids Fun Run and to raise early awareness of the event.

This year, 31 entries were received that responded to the 2010 race theme of “Surf, Sun & Run.”

The children submit their best interpretation of the theme in drawing form and the Race Committee votes on the submissions.

The winning drawing will become the T-Shirt design for the kid’s shirts this year.

This year’s winning entry, shown here, was submitted by fourth grade McGaugh student Kalei Iwami.  Kalei won a new bike from Main Street Cyclery.  Second place went to Kianna Taverner, a McGaugh third grade student who took home a new skateboard from Furnace.  Third place was also done by a McGaugh fourth grade student, Shelby Samuelson, who received a $50 gift certificate from Harbour Surfboards.

“All the drawings were wonderful.” says Kid’s Run Coordinating Director Michelle Samuelson.  “The committee had a tough job to narrow it down to the top three.  All the kids who participated should be commended for their great work.”
