Seal Beach candidate papers available July 16

Seal Beach will consolidate its election with the statewide general election and will vote to elect two council members and the city clerk.

Nomination papers will be available from Monday, July 16, to Friday, Aug. 10.

Candidates must be United States citizens, registered voters, and at least 18 years old. Council candidates must live in the council district for which they wish to run. The city clerk is elected citywide. The filing fee is $288 (non-refundable) and a deposit for an optional 200-word candidate’s statement is $550 for council Districts 2 and 4 and $700 for City Clerk.

Municipal Code Section 2.10.010.C limits campaign contributions by individuals or committees to $500.

Also on the ballot will be six ballot measures amending the Seal Beach Charter:

• Shall the Seal Beach Charter be amended to eliminate the municipal run-off election process?

• Shall the Seal Beach Charter be amended to make state law govern the waiting period for installation of newly elected officials?

• Shall the Seal Beach Charter be amended to allow the City Council to call an election by resolution?

• Shall the Seal Beach Charter be amended to make City Council members ineligible for appointment as city manager or as a department head while serving on the City

Council and for three years thereafter?

• Shall the Seal Beach Charter be amended to allow the City Council to establish the City Manager’s powers and duties by ordinance?

• Shall the Seal Beach Charter be amended to eliminate an obsolete article regarding the Board of Education?
