School district tests well in English, math

Ninety-four percent of Los Alamitos Unified School District students ranked “proficient or advanced” in the English-language arts on 2012 California Standardized Tests, according to the state Department of Education.

The figure represents 94 percent of 7,102 district students in grades two thru 11. In all, 7,324 students were tested and scored in various subjects. There were 7,355 students enrolled in the district on the first day of testing.

“The CSTs for English-language arts, mathematics, science and history-social science are administered only to students in California public schools,” according to the Department of Education website.

“Except for a writing component that is administered as part of the grades four and seven ELA tests, all questions are multiple choice,” the website said.

English wasn’t the only subject in which Los Al Unified students did well.

In history, 88 percent scored proficient or advanced our of 2,396 students in grades eight thru 11 and “end-of-course” students.

Mathematics tests were given to students in grades two thru seven and “end-of-course.” Of the 7,107 students tested for math, 86.4 percent scored proficient or advanced. In science, tests were administered for students in grades five, eight and 10. Of the 2,129 students tested, 95 percent rated proficient or advanced.

Here is a partial breakdown of English and math scores by grades two thru six:

Second-grade:

English—83 percent scored advanced; 1 percent scored below basic and another 1 percent scored far below basic.

Math—96 percent  scored advanced; 1 percent scored below basic and zero percent scored far below basic.

Third-grade:

English—78 percent scored advanced; zero percent scored below or far below basic.

Math—94 percent scored advanced; zero percent scored below or far below basic.

Fourth-grade:

English—96 percent scored advanced; zero percent scored below or far below basic.

Math—96 percent scored advanced; zero percent scored below or far below basic.

Fifth-grade:

English—78 percent scored advanced; zero percent scored below or far below basic.

Math—70 percent scored advanced; zero percent scored below or far below basic.

Sixth-grade:

English—88 percent scored advanced; zero percent scored below or far below basic.

Math—62 percent scored advanced;  1 percent scored below basic and zero percent scored far below basic.

Middle school and high school students were tested in various math categories—general mathematics, Algebra I, Geometry, Integrated Math 2, Algebra II, and Summative High School Mathematics.

The following is breakdown of middle and high school scores for English-language arts.

Eighth-grade

English—80 percent scored advanced; 1 percent scored below basic and zero percent scored far below basic.

Ninth-grade

English—88 percent scored advanced; 1 percent scored below basic and zero percent scored far below basic.

10th-grade

English—78 percent scored advanced; 2 percent scored below basic and zero percent scored far below basic.

11th-grade
