Leisure World board uses debit card?

In the September, 2015 AARP magazine there is a very well written article by the President regarding “Making Communities Better Places to Live.” One of the ideas is about “community” and what that means!  There is now a website called: “livability index.aarp.org.” And near the end of the article it is stated: “Livability is an issue of growing importance, whether you look at it as an engaged local resident, a taxpayer or both.  Supporting efforts to make your community more livable is an exercise in good citizenship and a smart investment of our tax dollars.”

With all of this being stated, I decided to live in what I thought was a livable community in Seal Beach.  That is a 55+ community at approximately the center of the City of Seal Beach.  As time goes on and assessments keeping rising in this 55+ community, looking at the financial records became important.

Recently, I looked at one of the financial records of the Managing Board of Directors for the 55+ community.  To my astonishment, there was an additional account being used with a debit card.  This account had many, many, many charges to places like Amazon and restaurants totaling enormous amounts dollars.  Now it becomes very baffling and puzzling as to the necessary actions to be taken.

This 55+ community Managing Board of Directors must consider having a thriving and lovely community built on integrity.  Integrity means a quality or state of being of sound moral principle, uprightness, honesty and sincerity.  However, there seems to be a “silent” majority taking no action.  Now this majority is encouraged to not be “silent” any more. A famous quote, Winston Churchill (1941): “There is only one duty, only one safe course, and that is to try to be right and not to fear to do or say what you believe to be right.”

Leisure Worlders celebrate Centennial

The movie, “Grease,” presented on the amphitheater doors in Leisure World, Sept. 12 was a great success. It was part of the Seal Beach Centennial Celebration reaching out to all sectors of the city. People enjoyed singing along to familiar old songs from the ’50s. The show represented a cooperative effort of several organizations: the City of Seal Beach, the Centennial Committee, the Golden Rain Foundation and the Recreation Committee. All those attending had a lot of fun reliving their high school days. Prizes for the costume contest were provided by the Recreation Committee. Three shareholders from the audience also received gift certificates from the GRF. It was “cool” to sit in the audience eating popcorn provided by Caremore.

Our biggest thanks go to Ronde Winkler, GRF President, for the warm welcome and for explaining the support of Leisure World for the Seal Beach 100-year celebration. Thanks also to the L.W. Theatre Club for providing ushers, judges, costumes and moral support. Fifty percent of the 50/50 raffle went to the Golden Age Foundation for its programs supporting Leisure World activities.

A good time was had by all on this warm summer evening under the stars. We hope this venue will be used many times in the future.

Thank you,

Ellen Brannigan, Shareholder Mutual 14

Member Seal Beach Centennial Celebration Committee
