Young sailor places first in sabot races

Ryan Ayale, 12, is a Junior Sailor at Alamitos Bay Yacht Club.

This summer he placed “1st ” at the “Alamitos Bay C Fleet Championships” race (7/21/11) winning the perpetual trophy, and also won 1st place in Sabot C2 class at the Beach to Bay race

However, his best sailing memory is placing 1st out of 120 sailors in Sabot C3 class at the 2009 Jessica Uniack Memorial Beach to Bay Race (aka Beach to Bay race) winning the perpetual trophy.

Ayale will be a seventh grader at McAuliffe. He lives with his parents in Seal Beach, along with his younger brother Sean, who will be a fifth grader at McGaugh.

Brother Sean is also a junior sailor, and won “2nd place” out of 105 sailors in Sabot C3 class at this year’s “Beach to Bay” race.

The Beach to Bay race has 9 different classes of sailors:

1. Sabot A

2. Sabot B

3. Sabot C1

4. Sabot C2

5. Sabot C3 (this class is always the largest class with over 100 sailors competing!)

6. Laser

7. Laser Radial

8. CFJ

9. Optimist.

“C Fleet Championships” race is for all Sabot C1, C2 & C3 sailors in the Alamitos Bay area including ABYC (Alamitos Bay Yacht Club), LBYC (Long Beach Yacht Club), SLBYC (Seal Beach Yacht Club), and Leeway Sailing Center.
