Surfer Joe’s Long Board Classic will be held at 6:30 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 20 in Sunset Beach.  This is one of Sunset Beach’s largest events for the year, with over 100 surfers involved competing for a cash grand prize.

This one-day event brings people from all over Ventura, Los Angeles, Orange and San Diego counties to watch and participate.

Last year’s contest was deferred for a year, as Surfer Joe van der Linden got married and took a break after 15 consecutive annual contests.

There are four categories the surfers register in, including Women’s, Amateur, Masters (the over 40 category) and the Professional divisions.

In 2009 the classic brought in over 70 surfers and this year they hope to see even more. Surfers come from Southern California, Northern California, San Diego and as far as Hawaii and Alaska. Just after the last heat of the day there will be a Bikini Contest at approximately 11 a.m. First place will take home a cash prize.

All girls are welcome, providing tasteful attire is worn.

There will be an open registration the day of the event.

Following the Classic there will be a Post Competition Awards ceremony at J. King Neptune’s, located at 17205 Pacific Coast Highway, Sunset Beach, to honor those who have won in the morning’s events.

The cash grand prize will be split between the first, second and third place winners in the Professional division.

There will also be a raffle and tickets will be on sale after the competition at J. King Neptune’s before the drawing.

These prizes will include items donated from local sponsors.
