SIBIFA presents virtual ride through Mexico canyon

The Seal Beach International Friendship Association will take an “armchair train ride” through Mexico’s Barancas Del Cobre,  Thursday night, Oct. 20.

Local filmmaker, Jackie Baird-Bunker will provide the virtual train tour.

Barancas Del Cobre has been voted one of the most scenic train rides in the world.

SBIFA members and the public are invited to attend the dinner program.

Dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m. at the Mary Wilson Library Senior Center, 707 Electric Ave., in Seal Beach, followed by a brief meeting and the presentation.

Mexico’s Copper Canyon is four times the size of the Grand Canyon and is home to the Tarahumara Indians where many still live in cave dwellings along the sheer canyon walls.

See the shy indigenous people play games and weave baskets and enjoy the scenic beauty of their homeland.

See the birthplace and early home of Zorro, learn about Poncho Villa’s activity in Copper Canyon and the most remote canyon where a former governor of Wash., DC moved his family and grand piano to the town of Batopilas and established a silver mining operation 6,000 feet below the canyon rim.

See the Paquime archeological site and learn about this advanced culture living in Chihuahua in 1200 AD.

See how the high quality polychrome clay pots of the Paquime have been brought back to life as you watch master potters in the tiny town of Mata Ortiz decorate and fire these pots.

Donation for members is $12 each or $22 for couples; non-members $15.00 or $27 for couples; $10 for students.
