Rossmoor opposes annexation

The Rossmoor Community Services District board unanimously passed a resolution Tuesday, Sept. 12, opposing Los Alamitos’ apparent plans to annex the Rossmoor Village shopping center and a neighboring apartment complex.

The area targeted is 14.5 acres in size. By state law, residents do not get a vote on annexation of an area that is less that 150 acres.

The Los Alamitos City Council recently directed the city’s Planning Commission to begin the process of annexation.

Team Spirit sets Breast & Ovarian Cancer 10K Walk

Special to the Sun

The 2011 Team Spirit Breast & Ovarian Cancer 10K Walk is an annual fundraising walk that raises money to benefit breast and ovarian cancer support programs at Long Beach Memorial.

It will be held from 7:45 – 10:45 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 24 at McKenna’s on the Bay, 190 Marina Drive, Long Beach.

Team Spirit was founded, in 2000, as a small grass roots organization on the belief that more can be done to help fight and raise awareness of breast and ovarian cancer in the community. The Walk brings friends and families together to raise money for breast and ovarian cancer research and to support a unique gynecologic peer mentoring program at the MemorialCare Todd Cancer Institute, which is one of only two of its kind in the nation.

•    Thousands of people will walk to support women with breast and ovarian cancers and in honor of women who have passed away

•    Long Beach Firefighters will sound their sirens to kick-off the Walk

•    John Morris, longtime Long Beach restaurateur and entrepreneur, will be the Master of Ceremonies

•    Families and friends cheering walkers on the sideline and the start and finish area

•    Deejay will be playing music at the beginning and throughout the Walk to pump the crowd up

Team Spirit helps to fund cancer support programs at the MemorialCare Todd Cancer Institute at Long Beach Memorial. These programs include Women Guiding Women: Cancer Support and Education, a peer-mentoring program, support groups and the addition of a nurse navigator to the program.

The peer-mentoring program is for newly diagnosed gynecologic and breast cancer patients, matching them with a specially trained cancer survivor. The gynecologic and breast support groups utilize an open format, providing opportunities to share individual stories, learn ways to reduce stress and enhance coping skills while focusing on adaptive and empowering attitudes. These programs are available to anyone in the community, regardless of their financial status.
