Students meet state officials, tour Alcatraz

McGaugh Elementary School’s fourth-grade students and parents spent a sunny and beautiful whirlwind weekend touring Sacramento and San Francisco on the weekend of March 15 and 16.

Highlights on Friday, March 15, included visiting the State Capitol Building and a special tour of the Senate floor with State Senator Tom Umberg’s Chief of Staff Jackie Koenig and other staff members before heading to Gold Country, where students panned for gold and learned how to throw real tomahawks.

The group then visited the quaint town of Coloma, where the Gold Rush started and saw Sutter’s Mill and saw real blacksmiths hard at work before heading back to downtown Sacramento to the hotel to enjoy a night swim and a good night’s sleep. Sunday’s highlights included walking the grounds of Alcatraz and taking the Audio Tour inside the prison, eating a delicious lunch on Pier 39, playing at the Exploratorium, riding a Cable Car through the streets of San Francisco and taking pictures in front of the Golden Gate Bridge before heading back home on Saturday evening. Students and parents not only learned all about California’s history and government, but they created memories with both their parents and peers that will last a lifetime.
