Los Al baseball loses two key games

The marquee in front of Los Alamitos High School stated Spring Break started Monday, March 29 and the Varsity baseball did just that for their baseball season by losing two important league games.

The Esperanza Aztecs came to town and shut out the Los Alamitos Varsity Baseball team 10-0. As customary, the CIF requires the umpires to pre-game check all equipment of both teams for safety and required mandates for this equipment.

No need to check the aluminum bats. Los Alamitos, after last week’s championship bombing of top-ranked Newport-Harbor, went scoreless against Esperanza. (Note: Esperanza beat Edison last week, turning the league results into frenzy).

Somewhere between Newport Beach and Los Alamitos, the Varsity team lost that loving feeling to hit the ball. Esperanza showed an excellent pitching staff that no-hit the Griffins thru the first three innings. No great playing errors by the Los Al infield or outfield, just consistent Punch and Judy hits by Esperanza and three smashing homeruns by Esperanza and it was 10-0 in the top of the seventh.

Esperanza played great baseball and is a team that is now in first place in the Sunset League.

Off we go to Marina High School where again Los Al hitting put up 1 run (4 hits) to Marina’s 7. The Los Al outfield again looked good with the presence of Patrick Ivison roaming in center field.

Relief pitching came into play throughout the game and may be one of Los Al’s weaknesses. Let us blame the coaching! In the last two games I have not seen Coach Aaron Moore remind the umpires about the rules of the game.

I enjoy the Tommy Lasorda approach Coach Moore brings to the game and the team. It wakes up the continuous crowd of Los Al supporters and lets you know that we are still in the game. Speaking of crowds, Los Alamitos High School should announce the need for some student support out there for a great baseball team and program.

Latest league (flip of the coin) updates puts Los Alamitos (3-2) in third place in the combative Sunset League.

Upcoming game schedule can be reviewed on www.griffinbaseball.org.
