Jewish community members brave rain for Menorah Lighting

The rain subsided and the sun came out just in time for the 4th annual Chanukkah menorah lighting at the Seal Beach Pier Sunday, Dec. 3.

As in previous years, the festive evening included traditional foods – potato pancakes called latkes donated by Trader Joes, doughnuts donated by Jeffrey Singer of Premier Automotive Consultants and vitamin rich, zero calorie drinks from Activate.

Around 100 people were entertained with traditional klesmer music provided by music legend, Leo Chelyapov and David Franklin.

This year, the traditional music was enhanced with a bagpipe introduction and some fun A Capella songs by the boys of the Los Alamitos High School National Champion Show Choir.

Both the food and the lights symbolize the miracle of Chanukkah when a single day’s supply of oil lasted eight days and nights as the Maccabees rebuilt the temple.

This year’s celebration was held one week early.

Most of the Chabad Los Alamitos members will be joining a larger group for a menorah lighting at Universal Studios on Dec. 9, the second night of Chanukkah 2012.
