After opening the season with four losses, the Los Alamitos High boys soccer team has won two of its last three games and if all goes as expected, Head Coach Donovan Martinez is expecting a strong season to follow up on the teams run to the CIF-SS finals last year.

The biggest issue early on is the fact that much of the team’s starters and contributors who took the Griffins to the finals last year, are still finishing out their club soccer commitments. A few will trickle in, but for the most it will still be a couple of weeks before the full team is back.

Until then, Donovan is working with his younger players, who are getting a chance to make case for more playing time. He said they are working through some things as a unit, but he is optimistic for the season overall.

“I’m excited though, I’m excited for the year. I mean last year we had a phenomenal year,” Donovan said.

Much of the strength of the team is expected to be on the defensive end, where they return several key defenders and goalie Anthony Gomez.

Last year the Griffins were placed in the Division 3 bracket and eventually lost to Charter Oak, 3-2, in the finals. They are slated for Division 1 this year.
