Ellery Deaton is re-elected Seal Beach mayor

The City Council unanimously re-elected District One Councilwoman Ellery Deaton as Seal Beach mayor Monday, Dec. 8. The council also unanimously re-elected Councilman David Sloan as mayor pro-tem.

The City Council re-organizes every December, selecting the mayor and mayor pro-tem. The selected council members each serve one-year terms. The council members usually take turns serving as mayor.

This year, Deaton was re-elected mayor following her swearing in alongside newly elected District Three Councilman Mike Varipapa and District Five Councilwoman Sandra Massa-Lavitt.

City Attorney Steve Flower took over the meeting for the re-organization. Then 2014 Mayor Pro-Tem David Sloan nominated Deaton to be the 2015 mayor. District Four Councilman Gary Miller seconded the nomination.

Flower said a second wasn’t necessary. No one else nominated a mayoral candidate. Deaton was elected unanimously. Deaton then nominated Sloan as mayor pro-tem. No one else nominated a candidate for that office.
