Crime Log: OCFA rescues College Park East cat

Fire fighters liberate cat trapped inside a wall.

Orange County fire fighters rescued a College Park East cat on the Friday after Thanksgiving.

Antoinette Chandler and her family were in their garage, pulling down Christmas decorations when they heard a series of mournful “meows.”

The cat sounded like it was in deep trouble. Literally, as it turned out.

Antoinette Chandler and her College Park East family stopped wrestling with the Yuletide decorations to search for the troubled cat.

“We followed the sound into the side yard, near the gate, but we could not locate the cat making the sound,” Antoinette Chandler said. “It almost seemed like the cat was inside the drain pipe of the rain gutters.”

Then the Chandlers saw a cat’s black tail sticking out between the concrete block wall and the side of the garage.

The Chandlers immediately recognized the cat’s tail.

“Somehow our cat, Misty, had fallen into the top concrete block, and was trapped about 5 feet down inside the block wall,” Antoinette Chandler said.

“We tried to get her out, but it was no use,” she said

The Chandlers called the Orange County Fire Authority.

In about five minutes, a red fire truck and four fire fighters were on the scene to rescue Misty.

“After prying, chiseling, and tapping the block wall, they made a hole big enough that Misty could squiggle through and run to safety,” Antoinette Chandler said.

“She burst from the wall and ran across the garden and over the gate and into the back yard and into the house and under our son’s bed—her safe place,” Antoinette Chandler said.

Misty stayed under the bed for several hours.

The Chandlers, relieved by her rescue, left Misty to her devices as they went about decorating their home for the holidays.Hours later, when Misty emerged from under the bed, Misty found the house decorated for Christmas.

“We will need to repair the wall now, but our cat, Misty, is safe and unharmed, thanks to the exemplary skills of our OC fire fighters,” Antoinette Chandler said.
