Parking meter monies will be used to improve the alleys on Second Street in the Belmont Shore area of Long Beach.

The Belmont Shore Parking and Business Improvement Area Advisory Commission recently voted to use a portion of Belmont Shore parking meter revenue to improve the commercial alleys running parallel to Second Street in Belmont Shore.

The estimated $1.2 million project will remove the old degraded surface and replace it with a new heavy-duty cement surface.  Alleys on both the north and south side of Second Street are scheduled to be replaced. Work is projected to begin in mid-February or early March, and is expected to take five weeks.

“These alleys are heavily used by both residents and businesses and provide critical access to Belmont Shore businesses and associated parking facilities,” said  3rd District City Councilmember Gary DeLong, who represents the area.

“This project has been planned for many years and I am pleased to have been able to push it to fruition,” DeLong said.

The work plan will limit the amount of area impacted at one time.  Deliveries and trash collection will be temporarily relocated to the side streets.

Quick-dry cement will be used so that alleys can be returned to service as soon as possible.

Public outreach will include community meetings, mailings to all addresses in the area and flyers.

In addition, the project will establish a single point of contact, a dedicated e-mail address, and telephone number to respond to community concerns leading up to and during the project.
