2014 Health Expo Rocks

Around 2000 people flocked to Eisenhower Park in the shade of the Seal Beach Pier on Saturday, March 22, for the Seal Beach Chamber of Commerce’s 2014 Health Expo, organizers said. The event was not only well-attended and enjoyed by many residents and visitors but many more guests than usual availed themselves of free health screenings as well as the other attractions.

“We had more people taking advantage of the health screening than ever before,” said Diana Bean, who coordinated the event for the Chamber. “According to the person from SCAN they had about 148 screenings. Los Alamitos Medical Center did almost 200 cholesterol screenings and that was the first time we had that at the Health Expo.”

Bean also said that Western University Pharmaceutical performed 188 blood pressure and glucose screenings, while the Seal Beach Lions Club had 56 people take advantage of their sight and hearing screenings.

“I was very pleased with the numbers,” Bean said. “There were a lot more people having a hands-on  experience this year instead of just walking around.”

Many got involved with the Zumba demonstration, kicking up their heels and joining in the exercise craze.

“We also had a bigger bounce house for the kids this year,” Bean said.

Also in the kids section many children learned the importance of washing their hands to prevent germs from spreading. This was done with a demonstration using glitter on their hands and showing them how it passes from one hand to another unless it is thoroughly cleaned off.

“It was pretty fun,” Bean said, “and the kids learned something of value.

Bean and her husband Gary Bean’s Take Shape for Life Health & Wellness Coaches business also performed many tests for guests’ to determine their body mass index.

“A lot of people learned where they are at according to their body fat related to their lean muscle,” Bean said. “We also taught some what to do if you are overweight.”

Bean said that from all accounts, this year’s Health Expo was bigger and better than ever before.

“We also got a lot of feedback from all of the participants who had booths at the Expo,” Bean said. “They love it being held at the Seal Beach pier and said it is a great venue for it.”
