Witnesses capture theft suspect

Seal Beach Police arrested a suspected purse thief Tuesday evening, April 30, after witnesses captured the fleeing man.

Police received a report from a 46-year-old Seal Beach woman that, at 6:36 p.m., she saw a man take her unattended purse from her shopping cart while she was shopping at the Seal Beach Pavilions grocery store on Pacific Coast Highway.

The woman’s reaction and pleas for help triggered a response from other shoppers. Witnesses, including an off duty police officer from another community, gave chase and ultimately detained the suspect. The woman’s purse was recovered at the scene.

Upon arrival, Seal Beach police officers took Christopher Vosburgh, 23, of Seal Beach into custody. He was booked at the Orange County Jail. He was still in custody as of mid-afternoon, Wednesday, May 1, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department website.

No one was injured during the crime or apprehension. The victim’s property was returned to her at the scene.
