The State of the Los Al District: Igniting Unlimited Possibilities

More than 170 people attended Los Alamitos Unified School District Superintendent Dr. Sherry Kropp’s the State of the District breakfast on Friday, Sept. 16, at the Eagle’s Nest clubhouse at Navy Golf Course in Cypress.

“It was an honor and a privilege for me to share our District highlights with the broader community,” said Dr. Kropp.    This year’s presentation partially focused on the partnership between Los Al Unified and the community.  Los Alamitos Mayor Richard Murphy, Rossmoor Community Services District President Tony DeMarco and Seal Beach Mayor Sandra Massa-Lavitt spoke of their partnerships with Los Alamitos Unified and congratulated the district on the amazing successes.  The audience also heard from Congressman Alan Lowenthal who presented Los Alamitos USD with a Certificate of Recognition for being one of only five districts in the United States to be named on the College Board’s Advanced Placement Honor Roll for six years in a row.

Los Al USD’s Teacher of the Year Bret Lynes and CSEA President Mitch Banales also addressed the crowd to give their perspective on the school district.  Guests were entertained before the presentation by the Los Alamitos High School Advanced Jazz Combo, along with Instrumental Music Director Justin Padilla.  The Pledge of Allegiance was led by School Board President Karen Russell and LAHS student Victoria Rice sang the National Anthem.

The event was attended by district parents, PTA groups, staff, administration, school board members and Los Alamitos Education Foundation’s board of directors.  In addition, State Senator Janet Nguyen, Seal Beach Mayor Pro Tem Mike Varipapa, Seal Beach city council member Gary Miller, Los Alamitos Mayor Pro Tem Shelley Hasselbrink, Los Alamitos city council members Dean Grose and Warren Kusumoto, and RCSD board member Ron Casey are elected officials who were on hand to learn more about the success of our schools.  There was also a great turnout among city officials including Los Al City Manager Bret Plumlee, Seal Beach City Manager Jill Ingram, SBPD’s Chief Joe Stilinovich, Los Al PD’s Chief Eric Nunez, and RCSD General Manager James Ruth.  Seal Beach Chamber of Commerce President Tom Rowe and staff from Assemblyman Travis Allen’s office were also in attendance as a strong show of support for education in our community.

“We are delighted to work with Dr. Kropp to provide the community with this opportunity to come together and celebrate our district’s accomplishments.  I am so proud of our district and truly enjoy learning about plans for future educational growth and excellence,” said LAEF Executive Director Carrie Logue.  LAEF is extremely grateful to the Title Sponsor, Alamitos Eye Care, and Valedictorian Sponsors, BNSF Railway, OnStage Dance Center and Southland Credit Union, for their generosity.
