Sun’s 2012 Year in Review: December

Police shooting

December began tragically when Garden Grove Police officers chased a stalking suspect to Seal Beach. The suspect reportedly attempted to carjack a vehicle and at that point, a Garden Grove officer shot him. The suspect, Matthew Lane, 35, of Glendale, died as a result.

Christmas parade

Main Street Seal Beach was closed at 5 p.m., Friday, Dec. 7, to make way for the Seal Beach Christmas Parade, which proved to be the biggest in the history of the 34-year-old event. The parade featured 110 entries. More than 100 volunteers from the Seal Beach Lions Club, the Chamber of Commerce and other groups helped coordinate the event. Observers and participants called it the best parade in the event’s long history.

New Rossmoor manager

Rossmoor hired Christine Montana to be the Community Services District’s new general manager, replacing Henry Taboada, who will continue to serve as the district’s  consultant for “external affairs.”

New mayor in town

Councilman Gary Miller was elected mayor. Councilwoman Ellery Deaton was elected mayor pro tempore.

The council thanked departing outgoing Mayor Michael Levitt.

Surfing Santa winners announced

The Sun announced the winners of the Surfing Santa Coloring Contest. First place went to Morgan Lim, 12, of Seal Beach, earning her a certificate for free surfing lessons from M&M Surfing School.
