Sun Region Cubs compete in Pushcart Derby

Matthew Brase gets ready to give fellow Rossmoor-area webelow Matthew Teufel a push to start the Pushcart Derby down Springdale Street in Huntington Beach.

Local Cub Scouts from Rossmoor Pack 658 competed in the 10th annual Pushcart Derby on March 20.

The event was sponsored by Garden Grove Boy Scout Troop 1103.  The race is held each year downhill from the Springdale over-crossing of the 22 Freeway.  Scattered rain showers threatened to cancel the event entirely, but the rain held off long enough for all of the qualifying heats to be completed.  For the first time in race history, there were no final heats and the race had to be terminated after the qualifying heats, due to heavy rain and thus unsafe track conditions.

The event draws approximately 160 scouts from Garden Grove, Huntington Beach, and Rossmoor Cub Scout Packs.  Each cub scout creates his own car and teams up with another scout to alternate pushing and driving down the hill on Springdale.

Cars are judged in several esthetic categories by Garden Grove city officials and racers receive trophies for winning the most points as a team, racing head-to-head against other teams in their same rank level (Webelo, Bear, Wolf, and Tiger).
