Work to precede Seal Beach Blvd. reduction
Staff report
The southbound I-605 / southbound I-405 connector will close for approximately two weeks beginning Monday, July 30 at 10 p.m. This connector must be rebuilt in order to accommodate the new I-405 / I-605 carpool connector and additional lanes on the I-405 freeway. Although this closure was originally scheduled for late 2012, the project team is accelerating work to begin this activity prior to the start of the Seal Beach Boulevard bridge reconstruction. Crews are expected to reopen the connector in mid-August.
Due to unforeseen weather and operational factors, dates are subject to change.
Seal Beach Boulevard lane reduction
After work on the southbound I-605 / southbound I-405 connector is complete, crews will begin work to reconstruct the Seal Beach Boulevard bridge over the I-405 freeway, to demolish and reconstruct the structure one half at a time.
During the first stage of construction, Seal Beach Boulevard (the portion over the I-405 freeway) will be reduced to one lane in either direction, with a center median dedicated solely to emergency services vehicles.
This lane configuration (one lane northbound and one lane southbound with emergency services median) will remain in place for 11 months.
In mid-2013 during the remaining 12 months of construction the bridge will be restored to two lanes in either direction until the new structure is completed in mid-2014. The final bridge will have four northbound lanes and three southbound lanes, essentially doubling the size of the original structure.
Although the Seal Beach Boulevard bridge will always remain open during the day, there will be delays due to lane restrictions. The traveling public is encouraged to seek alternate routes to ease their commute and avoid delays. There also will be intermittent night work requiring full closures for activities such as demolition and falsework placement.
The eastbound SR-22 / northbound I-405 connector is scheduled to close for approximately 12 months in August 2012. This connector must be reconstructed in order to accommodate the new I-405 / I-605 carpool connector.
