Seal Beach to draft own barking dog ordinance

Michael Levitt

Seal Beach Mayor Michael Levitt thinks Seal Beach can write its own ordinance.

Levitt told the Sun on Saturday, Jan. 22 that city staff had considered drafting a barking dog ordinance based on Long Beach’s barking dog ordinance.

However, Levitt was not pleased to learn that the Long Beach ordinance requires three neighbors to file complaints at about the same time before the law takes action.

Levitt first raised the subject of a barking dog ordinance at the Monday, Dec. 13 City Council meeting.

“We don’t have an ordinance about barking dogs, but we have an awful lot of people who are bothered an awful lot of the time by barking dogs,” he said.”

He told the council that when police receive complaints about barking dogs, they are referred to Long Beach Animal Care Services. However, when residents call Long Beach Animal Care Services they refer citizens back to the Long Beach Police Department.

Yet the police can’t do anything because Seal Beach does not have a barking dog ordinance.

Levitt asked staff to draw up an ordinance and bring it back to the council. Staff looked at the Long Beach ordinance as a model.
