Makena Bassett, 11, of Seal Beach, won first place in the Sun Newspapers’ Third Annual Surfing Santa Coloring Contest. Seen above is her contest entry. The Judges were impressed that she added a seal and a whale’s tail, that she mounted her artwork, used color well and in a stylized fashion. Local artist and art educator Bill Anderson of Anderson’s Art Gallery in Sunset Beach did the drawing.
The familiar figure in the drawing is Michael Pless of M&M Surfing School of Seal Beach. Pless has been surfing in a Santa costume for many years at Seal Beach’s main beach in the shade of the Seal Beach pier.
The Sun received numerous entries and all were well done. The judges struggled over whom to choose for first, second and third place, but in the end they were satisfied with their choices.
First Prize is a gift certificate for three surfing lessons from M&M Surfing School in Seal Beach and the winning art published on the front page of The Sun. The
Second Place receives two M&M surfing lessons and Third Place receives one. Both second and third place entries are published in The Sun. Entries were judged by the staff of The Sun, with winners determined on Wednesday morning, Dec. 18.
Second Place winner was Marisa Westall, 8, of Seal Beach. Third Place winner was Nick Van Meter, 12, of Seal Beach. The winners will also win other surfing related items.
