Questions remain in child abuse court case

A hearing to determine if a 21-year-old woman’s child abuse case should be moved to the Orange County Mental Health Court has been scheduled to continue to Tuesday, May 29.

The hearing began Monday morning, May 21, and continued on Tuesday, May 22, in the case of a woman accused of dropping a then 9-day-old child in front of a police officer, according to the Orange County Superior Court website.

The boy survived his fall and was last reported in the cutstody of Child Protective Services.

There is no evidence that the woman, the boy’s mother, was under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time.

There are currently three court-appointed psychologists assigned to the case, according to the courthouse website.

According to authorities, on July 24, 2011, witnesses saw a woman swinging a small child around and called the Los Alamitos Police Department.

She was still swinging the baby when an officer arrived.

The officer ordered the woman to stop. She dropped the infant boy, who was then 9 days old.

At the time of the mother’s arrest, Los Alamitos Police Capt. Bruce McAlpine said there was a question of whether the woman was competent.

A hearing was held from September 2011 to March 2012 to determine if the defendant was mentally competent to stand trial.

Natasha Latise Lundy, now 21, has been charged with four felony counts including child endangerment and assault with a deadly weapon.

Lundy remains in custody in the Orange County Jail. Her bail has been set at $100,000. According to the Sheriff’s Department website, she is unemployed.
