Add this to the growing list of e-bike violations: Four kids (14+) on e-bikes chasing a coyote east on 10th Street towards PCH. The kids stop at the corner of 10th and PCH while the coyote, obviously freaked out, crosses all four lanes of PCH at full speed into the CVS parking lot. Luckily, although it being 6 p.m., Sunday evening, there was no traffic so the coyote made it across safely.
Now imagine if there was traffic, or perhaps a motorcycle or bicycle causing a collision. It would not have ended well. The kids thought it hilarious. I’ll refrain from writing what I wanted to say (and perhaps should have said); you can pretty much guess.
Parents: it’s your responsibility to teach your kids not to be such knuckleheads. You might think they are ‘just doing kid things’ but an e-bike is no toy. If you don’t think so, stand in front of one that’s doing 25 mph. Let us know how that works out for you. To the mayor and City Council: Seal Beach dodged a bullet this time, but luck only lasts so long. The next bad e-bike accident is on its way, guaranteed. I’m not sure what can be done (that’s above my pay grade) but something must be done. To do nothing is a tragedy in the making and this incident is a stark reminder.
