Opinion: Time to turn on Rossmoor’s holiday lights

My name is Chris Marshall.  For the last few years, I have coordinated the Rossmoor Christmas Lights contest for the Rossmoor Homeowners Association. As we head into the holiday season, I’m reaching out to the Rossmoor community.

Rossmoor residents and homeowners have done a great job for the past few years making the unique neighborhood look festive during the Christmas season. Some of you have already expressed an interest in enhancing your front lawn with a Rossmoor Holiday Light Post. These efforts are greatly appreciated by the community at large, as well as residents of Los Alamitos and Seal Beach who enjoy doing some holiday cruising through Rossmoor to take in the spectacular job our residents do to make the neighborhood festive during this special time of year.

As mentioned in several Rossmoor Homeowners Association e-mails and newsletters, they will be hosting a “Holiday Light Post Santa’s Workshop” on Sunday, Nov. 11, at Rush Park. It will start at about 1:30 p.m. The homeowners association would love to have Rossmoor residents participate. While there, they could build their own, lighted post and further enhance their home and the neighborhood.

The homeowners association will purchase all the materials in bulk and have them ready to start building on that Sunday, with experienced “post building” volunteers to provide exact instructions and help participants from start to finish.

Randy Leavenworth, who has assembled quite a few, said each post made at the workshop would take less than an hour to assemble.  All the materials, including the lamp, mounts, screws, inside wire, brackets, ribbon and garland will be provided, so your light post will be immediately ready to display on your lawn, whenever you want to start your Christmas lights and decorations.  In our household, this is the day after Thanksgiving!

This is a volunteer workshop, so whatever the materials cost will be passed through without any mark up. The initial price of each post is $110, which includes all the items mentioned above.  Most likely the cost will be $10 to $20 less, depending on the number of people who sign up.  If you can’t make it to the workshop on Nov. 11, the homeowners association has recruited several neighborhood kids (young elves) who can build it for you.  The additional cost will be $15 for assembly and delivery, and the full amount will go directly to the elf, that made it for you.

The homeowners association would love to have you participate!  The key is, we need to order the materials soon to get the bulk discount.  You can see an actual post on display now, located in front of 2751 St. Albans Dr.

Please email me back or call me with your plans for participation Oct. 27.  Also, please get this information out to any of your Rossmoor friends/neighbors. That way several neighbors on a street could share a common Christmas Lights theme.

I can be reached at rossmoorlights@gmail.com, or call (562) 343-6908 for any questions or sign ups.
