Opinion: Against Measure EE

In considering Measure EE, please don’t be confused by non-issues.

Professionalism is not the issue: All City Clerks learn “on-the-job” and can do so within a short period of time through inexpensive annual seminars and conferences. There is even free mentoring available from the City Clerks Association.

Money is not the issue:  According to City Manager, Jill Ingram, Measure EE will have “no anticipated fiscal impact” (Staff report, 7/28/14).

So what is the issue?

Control. Measure EE gives the Council or City Manager control over the person monitoring elections, control over the person listening in on “backroom” closed session meetings, and control over the person responsible for guaranteeing citizens full access to public records.

It is critically important that this person be a watchdog for the people. Look at the City of Bell– When the appointed City Clerk was asked in court why she knowingly provided a document to a citizen, which understated Robert Rizzo’s salary, she responded, “He was my boss and I needed to listen to what he was telling me to do.”

This is why five out of six non-incumbents running for Council voted “No” on EE at the Chamber of Commerce forum.

Vote NO on EE!
