Los Alamitos track sets records at Sunset League meet

The Los Alamitos High School track team shattered three Sunset League records and dismantled two school records recently, at Cerritos College as the Los Alamitos track program excelled in a tack meet composed of the best of the Sunset League.

“Our track program had an amazing day today at the Sunset League Championship, The Varsity Girls clinched their first ever Sunset league Track Championship,” said Nathan Howard, head coach of the Los Alamitos High School track team.   “All in all we finished as league champions in Girls Varsity and freshman/sophomore, and Boys JV.  The Varsity Boys finished as runners up to a very strong Esperanza team.  Any year that you win five of six championships is a great year.”

The Lady Griffins set records in both the girl’s varsity 400-meter relay (48.77) and the girl’s freshman/sophomore 400-meter relay (50.61).

The Narsity Lady Griffins—composed of Danielle Fessenden, Alicia Keyworth, Nikki Pokipala and Leah Iris—broke the Sunset League record set by Esperanza in 1995 at 48.85.

The freshman/sophomore Lady Griffins 4X100 meter team – composed of Lauren Iris, Gracen Alvarez, Raya Young and Jamie Holcomb—shattered the record set by Marina High School in 1991 at 50.76.

Moreover, the freshman/sophomore lady Griffins 4X400 meter team – composed of Jillian Shih, Sierra Roper, Gabi Figueroa and Emma Nuiry—set a new school record at Orange County Championships with a time of 4:12.35. Also setting a new school record at Orange County Championships was the Varsity Girls 4×400 meter team with a time of 3:56.08.

Team members are—Alicia Keyworth, Lauren Yamada, Cheyenne Perez, and Danielle Fessenden.

“We have an amazing group of talented athletes and we plan to build on this core base of talent,” said assistant coach Holly Iris, who coaches the Griffin sprinters.

Later, Los Alamitos freshman Emma Nuiry enjoyed a strong individual day, winning the 400 meters with a Sunset League record time of 59.98, beating the 60.3-second record set by Los Alamitos’ Maddie Caddell in 2006.

Shaquille Richardson was a double winner and CIF Qualifier in the 110 hurdles and 300m hurdles.

He also ran lead off for the 400-meter relay team which also placed first.

The other 4×100 team members are Nick Richardson, Josh Gasser, and Brad Gordon. The Varsity Boys 4×400 also placed first. Team members include: Franklin Cocchi, Cameron Baldwin, Kyle Nault, and Anthony Kriakin.

Jill de Avila set a school record in the Junior Varsity 1600 meter run, clocking in at 05:04.4.  Alicia Keyworth was the league champion in the Girls Varsity 400 meters, and Lauren Yamada placed second. Danielle Fessenden was the  league champion in the 200 meters.
