Los Al Lady Laxers lead their league

Seven games into their season, the Los Alamitos High School Women’s Varsity Lacrosse Team extended its unbeaten streak to 26 games and firmly established itself as the top team in CIF’s Southern Section.

The undefeated Lady Griffins’ tough early schedule included three top ten Southern Section teams and two top ten San Diego Section teams.  In seven games Los Al outscored opponents 104 to 44 and out-assisted opponents 40 to 8.

Both Beckman and Foothill tested Los Al who pulled out 2 point wins over each, and Los Al will likely meet one or both of these challengers in the playoffs.

West Side Lax ranks Los Al 8th overall in California and 21st west of the Mississippi.  The returning 2009 CIF Southern Section champs lost four starting seniors from last year’s team including Francie Crowell the Southern California Player of the Year for 2009.  Preseason polls placed Los Al at various spots in the Southern Section top five,  but Los Al, led by 2009 Coach of the Year, Meredith Meyran, with 10 seniors, 8 juniors, 2 sophomores and 1 freshman are dispatching opponents one by one and proving they deserve the top spot and are a force to be reckoned with.

On attack, seniors Tracy Paulson (32 Goals, 4 Assists) and Melanie Martinez (7G, 6A) are combining with junior Michelle Woyshner (2G, 4A) and freshman Julie Crowell (14G, 5A and gee that last name sounds familiar) for outstanding offensive play and effective re-defending when possession is lost.

In the midfield seniors Ashley Actkinson (15G, 5A and ranked 15th on West Side Lax’s Elite Girls 25) and Shaina Denny (17G, 10A) combine with junior starter Melissa Hastie (6G) and junior second line middies Torey Bailey (2G, 2A) and Allie Conrad (4G, 1A) for full field action.  Senior defenders Amiya Moretta , Kristin Robbins and Michelle Elias work effectively with new varsity sophomores Sophia Aragon and Keaton Otake.  Rounding out the first team is returning senior goalie Natalie Richards (53 saves).

Los Al will face another seasoned San Diego team on April 10th when they meet Bishops.  The regular season ends April 30th followed by the playoffs and Los Al’s drive to repeat as Southern Section champions.
