Lions collecting eyeglasses in October

In recognition of Lions World Sight Month, the Seal Beach Lions Club is asking people to look through drawers and closets for old, unwanted eyeglasses and donate them to the Lions Recycle for Sight program.

During the month of October, the Seal Beach Lions Club Lions Club will be collecting used prescription eyeglasses and sunglasses as part of a unique recycling program throughout the United States and Canada.  The glasses will be distributed to those in need in California and in developing countries.

“We need everyone to donate their old glasses,” said Mike Haley, Seal Beach Lions Club President.  “In most developing countries, an eye exam can cost as much as one month’s wages, and a single eye doctor may serve a community of hundreds of thousands of people.”

To donate used eyeglasses, place them in specially marked Lions Recycle for Sight collection bins located in Seal Beach at the Leisure World Health Center, Baytown Realty, Seal Beach Eyes, Tropical Juice, Kinda Lahaina, Leisure World US Bank, and both the PCH and Seal Beach Blvd. locations of The UPS Store.

The Lions will also have its bright Yellow Lions Recycling Mailbox located at the foot of the Seal Beach Pier during the weekend of Oct. 1 and 2.  Lions also recycle hearing aids.   For more information, contact Lion Cathy Newton at (310) 377-8955.

The glasses will first be sorted by Seal Beach Lions and then sent to our Southern California Lions Friend in Sight Eyeglass Recycling Center where they will be cleaned, categorized by prescription and prepared for distribution by Lions.  Many of these eyeglasses will be distributed right here in Southern California at one of the many sight clinics scheduled throughout the year.  According to the World Health Organization, the eyesight of approximately one-fourth of the world’s population can be improved through the use of a corrective lens.

To donate used eyeglasses, place them in specially marked Lions Recycle for Sight collection bins located in the Leisure World Health Center or the Leisure World US Bank location.  Lions also collect and recycle hearing aids.
