Griffins to host Diablos in playoff opener

With Tuesday’s wildcard round complete, the Los Alamitos High softball team knows who their first-round opponent will be. The Griffins will host Mission Viejo High on Thursday at 3:15 p.m. in the CIF-SS Division 1 first round. The Diablos are the second-place team out of the South Coast League and defeated Camarillo, 7-1, in the wildcard round. The Griffins are the first-place team out of the Sunset League were ranked No. 2 in the division in the final CIF-SS poll last week.

Huntington Beach High, which finished second in the Sunset League won its wildcard game, 2-0 over Westlake High. The Oilers will play a first-round game at Torrance High, the first-place team out of the Pioneer League on Thursday, starting a 6 p.m.

Pacifica High also won a wildcard game, 4-1, over Bonita High and will play a first-round game against La Mirada High on Thursday at 3:15 p.m. at Glenn High. The Mariners were the second-place team out of the Empire League.

Cypress High won the Empire League championship and will open the playoffs at home against Hemet High, which is the third-place team out of the Ivy League and advanced out of its wildcard round with a 15-3 win over Diamond Bar.
