Griffin softball splits two league games

The Los Alamitos High girls softball team remains locked in a battle for a top-three finish in the Sunset League heading into the final two weeks of the regular season.

The Griffins are 3-3 in league play, after splitting two games last week. Los Alamitos rolled past Fountain Valley, 5-0 on Thursday, led by senior catcher Rachel Sellers, who was 2 for 3 with two RBIs and a run scored. Freshman shortstop Mary Iakopo was also 2 for 3 with a run scored.

Freshman pitcher Ryan Denhart pitched seven innings, allowing just three hits and stiking out seven. The win improved her record to 9-4. The Griffins are 16-10 overall. Also contributing to the offense was sophomore outfielder Jenna Holcomb, who went 2 for 2 with a run and two stolen bases.

On April 29, the Griffins had a chance to hand Huntington Beach its first league loss, but the Oilers rallied to two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning for a walk-off, 4-3 victory.

The Oilers had take a 2-0 lead after the first inning, but the Griffins rallied with runs in the second, sixth and top of the seventh to grab a 4-2 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh. Junior outfielder Taylor Covington had a solo home run, while senior first baseman Tiana Bonde and Holcomb scored the other two runs.

After the Oilers’ first inning runs, Denhart settled in to scatter four hits, with two strikeouts and just one base on balls.

The Griffins were at second place Marina on Tuesday, and will play at fourth place Edison on Thursday. Their final two games are at Newport Harbor on May 13 and hosting Huntington Beach on May 15. All games begin at 3:15 p.m.
