District 1 Report: Seal Beach Run among April events

Spring is here and as I write the weather is sunny and beautiful, there is a children’s birthday party across the street filling the air with happy children sounds and I’m feeling so blessed to live in our beach community. All of us want our town and the Colony to be places to live our lives enjoying the salt air, the sound of the waves and sand in our toes. This month there is a lot happening. The final Environmental Impact Report on the DWP Property (1st and Ocean) was released Monday, April 2, the Main Street Beautification Project starts April 4, the 5/10 K Walk/Run is coming April 2 and the Car Show on Main Street is April 28. Here are some highlights:

Final EIR for Bay City Partners Property

Monday, April 16, the Environmental Quality Control Board will review the Final EIR on the property, Tuesday, April 17 the DWP Committee will review it, Wednesday, May 2 the Planning Commission will hold a public hearing on both the EIR and the plan for the property. The EIR and plan will then go on to the Council in June for final disposition. If this is an important decision to you, please be part of the process and attend the hearings.

5/10K Walk/Run

April 21 will be Seal Beach’s 38 Annual Walk/Run. Registration is limited and parking will be provided over at the Long Beach Alamitos Bay parking lots near the Crab Pot restaurant in addition to our Pier parking lots, the First Street parking lot and the 8th Street parking lot. Please Note: As in year’s past, Old Town Streets will be closed. All streets in old town in the 100 and 200 blocks will be closed Saturday, April 21st from approximately 7 to 9:30 a.m. Main Street, Ocean Avenue, Marina Drive and Electric will also be closed.

If you need to drive out during those hours, please have your car parked outside of the areas of street closures prior to 7 a.m. in the morning. Attached is a registration form so you can enter if you wish and a map of the Walk/Run course to help you plan for the morning.

Please be sure to observe all No Parking signs, which will be in effect during the race.

Classic Car Show on Main

April 28 the Classic Car show returns to Main Street for the 25 Annual Seal Beach Classic Car Show. Come on down to Main Street and see the beautiful cars on display from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Main Street Project

Starting Wednesday, April 4, Main Street began getting 25 new trees and new planters. The planters will be placed at the crosswalks to beautify our town, slow the traffic down and allow pedestrians a safe barrier before stepping out into the crosswalk in front of cars.

Although the bulk of the work will be done in the mornings before the shops open, there will still be disruption for our businesses during this period of time.

To facilitate resident and visitor shopping, the city will be bagging all of the Main Street Parking Lot meters for the duration of the construction. Please shop Main Street as it is worked on. Come down and eat or have a cup of coffee, buy a new flag or toy, taste some great olive oil, buy a little something for your home or purchase a great new piece of jewelry. Main Street is the soul of our town and come summer it will be more beautiful than ever.

New police program

Our Police Department has a new program to bring neighbors together so each block will have a neighborhood watch type program in effect and be prepared to help each other in case of an emergency.

I will be having a meeting soon at my house to introduce our neighborhood to the new program. If you would be interested in attending, please call me.

Ellery Deaton is the Seal Beach councilwoman for District 1, Old Town and Surfside Colony.
