California Cub Scouts have been racing miniature hand-made “race cars” in Pinewood Derbies since the first one held in 1953 in Manhattan Beach.

Seal Beach’s local Cub Scout Pack 116, which has serviced the Seal Beach community for the last 61 years, will hold its annual Pinewood Derby from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Jan. 28, at the Marina Center.

“There are always lots of smiles and cheers as each cub scout roots for his own favorite derby car,” said Tom Arthur, scout parent. “The memories of the competition, the camaraderie, and the time spent building the car with a parent or loved one will last a lifetime. Everybody is a winner at the Pinewood Derby.”

While the event is packed with fun, getting the track on time can be serious business.

Each scout crafts a racing vehicle out of a small block of pinewood to within specific length, width and weight parameters. It is an activity geared toward bringing the scouts and their parents closer together by participation in the project.

For example: All cars will need to be inspected and impounded at the Check In from 5 to 7 p.m., on Friday, Jan. 27 at the Marina Center, 151 Marina Dr., Seal Beach.

This year, the derby will include a “Big Kid Race” that is open to parents, siblings and friends of the community.  Entry fee is $10 and payable at the race.  BSA kits may be purchased for $4 at Knock Knock Toy Shop at 219-1/2 Main Street.  There is a Trophy for First Place as well as gift certificates to local merchants for overall 1st, 2nd & 3rd place.  This is a fundraiser and all proceeds go to the local Pack 116 fund. The public is invited to attend and check out the fun. For more information, e-mail Tom Arthur at tomarthur@socal.rr.com.
