Crime Log: Thieves burglarize Main Street bike shop

Dave Dunton in Main Street Cyclery with a new cash register to replace the one taken in the burglary.

The Main Street Cyclery was burglarized last weekend. The loss: a cash register and a broken front glass door.

Police don’t know exactly when the crime occurred, according to Cpl. Mary Martinez of the Seal Beach Police Department.

She said the incident apparently took place between 10 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 17, and 7 a.m., Sunday, Dec. 18.

Martinez said police initially received a report of a broken window at the bike shop on Sunday morning.

The burglars had broken through the glass front door of the shop.

“They came in and out through the glass door,” Martinez said.

The only thing that was missing from the bike shop when police arrived: the cash register.

Main Street Cyclery’s owner and founder Dave Dunton said it was unfortunate that he had such a good sales day on Saturday.

“I was notified at about 7:06 a.m. by the police and the people at Crema Café who herd the alarms going off,” Dunton said.

When Dunton and Seth Eaker, the store’s operations manager, arrived on the scene they found the broken glass and a hole where the cash register had been.

“There was about $800 in the register,” Dunton said. “It seemed as though it was done by someone who knew our operation. They were willing to risk 20 seconds to run in and grab the register and run out.”

Dunton said it will cost about $360 to fix the front door and install new glass.

“We feel violated,” Dunton said. “However, the neighboring merchants and Seal Beach people have been very supportive and helpful and nice.”

Martinez said police have no suspects at this time.

Dunton said that, from now on, he would leave the cash register empty and open.

Rossmoor home robbery defendant remanded

The defendant in a recent Rossmoor home invasion robbery is in custody without bail following a Friday, Dec. 16, bail review hearing, according to the Orange County Superior Court Web site.

The hearing has been scheduled to continue on Thursday, Dec. 22, when the preliminary hearing is also scheduled to take place.

At a preliminary hearing, a judge will determine whether there is enough evidence to justify allowing the case to go to trial.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Department Web site confirmed that the defendant is in custody and that his bail has been set at zero dollars.

The defendant, Tyler James Compton, 23, has already pleaded not guilty to all charges stemming from the Weatherby Road incident of Wednesday, Dec. 7.

Compton has been charged with robbery in the first degree, false imprisonment of an elder by violence, inflicting injury on an elder adult and two sentencing “enhancements” of using a firearm in the commission of a crime.

When the Sun went to press last week, Compton was being held on $210,000 bail.

According to the Sheriff’s Department Web site, an unnamed Rossmoor woman, whose age has been reported as 90, was getting her newspaper when two men forced her back inside her home.

She used Life Alert to call for help.

When sheriff’s deputies entered her home, they heard her yelling that she was tied up.

Deputies obtained descriptions of two suspects, one described as white and the other described as Hispanic.

Compton was reportedly arrested either late Dec. 7 or on Thursday, Dec. 8. The other suspect was described as a Hispanic man who wore black gloves with snowflakes on them.
