Crime Log: Seal Beach Police cancel checkpoint

A scheduled Seal Beach Police Department DUI checkpoint was canceled, as was the SBPD drug take back event.

“The Seal Beach PD has deferred our participation in the National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day,” said the message on the SBPD Facebook page.

The message, posted Thursday morning, April 28, advised people to check the Web site for National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day, www.nationaltakebackday.com.

Sgt. Steve Bowles, public information officer for the SBPD, said the DUI check point was “deferred” due to both road construction and the Saturday, April 30 Seal Beach Classic Car Show.

Los Al police host Prescription Drug Take-Back

Special to the Sun

Community members are encouraged to bring expired, unused, and un-wanted prescription and over-the-counter medications to the Los Alamitos Police Department for disposal during the National Take-Back Initiative on Saturday, April 30, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Participants should go to the front counter of the Los Al Police Department.

In addition to providing an environmentally safe and anonymous way to dispose of these unwanted drugs, this program is designed to increase awareness about the growing problem of prescription drug abuse in America.

Girl Scout Troop 1631 is working in partnership with the Los Alamitos Police Department to raise awareness about this event.

As part of their Silver Award Project, the girls have distributed flyers and posted signs to make people aware of the environmental damage that is caused by flushing medications into the sewage system where they contaminate our lakes, rivers, and oceans.

The National Take-Back Initiative also addresses a vital public health issue by encouraging the removal of medicines that languish in home cabinets and may become susceptible to misuse and abuse.

Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are alarmingly high with more Americans abusing prescription drugs than using cocaine, hallucinogens, and heroin combined, according to the 2009 National Survey on Drug Use and Health.

Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet.

One way to get prescription drugs out of medicine cabinets and away from those who might be tempted to misuse them is to participate in this program.

The collection will take place, no questions asked, at the front counter of the Los Alamitos Police Department only on April 30. No intravenous solutions, liquids, injectables, or needles will be accepted as part of the take-back program. For more information, call the Los Alamitos Police Department at (562) 431-2255, extension 445 or 410.
