Crime Log: Seal Beach Police accepting applications for sworn officers

The Seal Beach Police Department is looking for police officer applicants. Sgt. Phil Gonshak said the department is looking for two officers.

The deadline to apply is Friday, July 11, according to the job flier.

The job pays $7,003 – $8,512 a month.

The news was posted online on the SBPD’s Facebook page on Wednesday, July 2.

“The City of Seal Beach is in the process of establishing an eligibility list for Lateral/Academy Graduate Police Officer,” said the job flier.

A “lateral” officer is one who has been hired from another police department. The job flier said an applicant who is still in the police academy must graduate within three months.

An officier who is hired would serve a 12-month probation period.

Newly hired city employees/members are eligible retirement benefits based on the 2.7 percent at age 57 formula.

Seal Beach employees pay 12 percent of the Public Employees Retirement System contribution, according to the flier. Benefits for officers also include $50,000 group term life insurance, which is entirely paid for by the city.

After probation, an officer may receive $175 to $375 a month, depending on the level of education involved.

Officer applicants will have to be in good physical condiaiton and have vision that can be corrected to 20/30. Applicants may not be color blind.

“Duties include: receives instructions regarding problems and assignments during an assigned shift; patrols the streets to observe evidence of violations of law or conditions conducive to illegal activities or traffic accidents; reports hazards; renders first aid and emergency medical attention; issues citations or warnings; directs pedestrian and motor traffic; investigates crimes and violations reported; locates, gathers and preserves evidence and performs related duties as assigned,” the job flier said.

Graffiti/Vandalism—8:26 a.m.—First Street—The caller reported that someone wrote graffiti in the men’s room at the location sometime during the night. No suspect information. Referred to City Yard. Report taken.

Suspicious Person—11:42 a.m.—Seventh Street—The caller said a man walking toward Electric Avenue was looking at vehicles.

Tuesday, July 1

Assist Other Department—12:44 p.m.—A Surfside Avenue—A dog owner had a dog off the leash on the beach. Lifeguards were present, but the owner was not complying with the Lifeguards’ instructions.            But at 12:58 p.m., the log said individual complied with the Lifeguards. Counseled.

Fireworks Reported—8:13 p.m.—Crestview Avenue—The caller said five minors, approximately 12 years old, were in the street setting off fireworks. However, patrol unit 207 determined that they did not have fireworks—they were usuing Pop-Its.

Monday, June 9

Disturbance—7:04 a.m.—Katella Avenue—The caller reported an individual in the emergency room lobby harassing other patients while waiting to be seen.

The individual had taken speed. No weapons were involved and it was unknown if he was on alcohol. The individual left and was seen northbound on Cherry Avenue. A police unit was hailed by hospital staff, and made contact with the man, who was being detained in the back of a vehicle. Police escorted him back to the emergency room.

Monday, June 9

Medical Aid—11:14 a.m.—Farquhar Avenue—The caller reported a man having difficulty breathing, that he was having a seizure and turning blue. Orange County Fire Authority was en route. The man was breathing better and gaining color to his face.

He was transported to Los Alamitos Medical Center by ambulance.

Monday, June 9

Counseling—11:14 p.m.—Green Avenue—The caller reported their son was receiving threats from a fellow classmate at Los Alamitos High School. He had received more than 30 texts in the last hour making conditional threats regarding a school project that was due the next day. The suspect said he was only joking around, and the caller’s son said they often joke around in class. The suspect was advised not to use that sort of language.

Suspicious Person—4:37 a.m.—Green Avenue—The caller reported a Hispanic woman running through a gate in the apartment complex into a light gray van, when the driver started up his vehicle. It turned out to be a newspaper delivery.

Wednesday, June 11

Lobby—2:19 p.m.—Farquhar Avenue—The caller was a realtor who was at a location showing property at 9:30 a.m. She said she located a mattress and comforter in the attic, and overheard a rumor that a “felon” might be staying there. Police counseled her.

Wednesday, June 11

Welfare Check—7:33 p.m.—Catalina Street—The caller reported hearing a child crying for “mommy” for the past 15 to 20 minutes. The caller feared the child may be locked in a room, and said the unit is located to the back of the property. A second caller advised that it’s possibly the first apartment close to 7 Eleven. Patrol made contact at the front of the property, and it turned out to be a baby and sick mother. Patrol determined no further police services were necessary.

Disturbance, Music—7:40 p.m.—Snark Street—The caller reported loud music next door and asked them to quiet down. A female told him that her husband was a police officer so it didn’t matter. It turned out to be a graduation party for eighth-graders. Patrol advised the participants.

Welfare Check—7:45 p.m.—Los Alamitos Boulevard—The caller reported a man in a full-sized truck parked to the rear of the location with a driver who appeared to be passed out. It turned out he was taking a nap.

Suspicious Person or Circumstances—9:48 a.m.—Quail Run Road—A man who appeared to be homeless rang the caller’s doorbell.

Shots Heard—9:01 p.m.—Foster Road and Engel Drive— No suspect information—The caller reported smelling fireworks in the channel. The caller only heard one loud boom coming from the north side of the location.

Suspicious Person or Circumstances—7:48 a.m.—Hedwig Road—A deputy searched for a man described as a transient who was sleeping at the park. The caller was concerned because kids would be dropped off for daycare.

Burglary in Progress—12:42 p.m.—Weatherby Road—The log did not say if this was an automobile or residential burglary.

Suspicious Person or Circumstances—3:18 p.m.—Foster Road—The caller got out of the shower and found that her kitchen door was wide open.

Citizen Assist—1:08 a.m.—Engel Drive—An unspecified number of individuals egged the caller’s residence and left on foot in an unknown direction of travel. The caller said this was an on-going issue.

Suspicious Person or Circumstances—3:56 p.m.—Hedwig Road—A deputy searched for four men reportedly smoking drugs in a park.

Burglary Report—5:44 a.m.—Foster Road—The log did not say if this was an automobile or residential burglary.

Suspicious Person or Circumstances—3:43 p.m.—Copa De Oro Drive—A deputy searched for a man walking around the neighborhood who reportedly said that he will work on vehicles. The caller thought it was a scam.

Suspicious Person in Vehicle—9:12 p.m.—Martha Ann Drive—The caller thought a woman in a car in front of the residence might be on drugs, but could not say why he thought so.
