Crime Log: SBPD issues citations at DUI/driver’s license checkpoint

No one was arrested, but officers issued citations for cell phone use and other infractions at the Friday, May 9, Seal Beach Police Department DUI/Driver’s License checkpoint at Lampson Avenue and Rose Street, according to Sgt. Phil Gonshak, the department’s public information officer.

He said several citations were issued.

Research shows that crashes involving an impaired driver can be reduced by up to 20 percent when well-publicized DUI checkpoints are conducted routinely.

In California, this deadly crime led to 774 deaths because someone failed to designate a sober driver.

“Over the course of the past three years, DUI collisions have claimed lives and resulted in numerous injury crashes harming our friends and neighbors,” said Sgt. Phil Gonshak.

Recent national statistics reveal that 30 percent of drivers in fatal crashes had one or more drugs in their systems.

Funding for the checkpoint was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
