Crime Log: Rape defendant’s arraignment set for Jan. 18

Orlando Bruce Bosley

The cab driver accused of raping a woman in Seal Beach Leisure World is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday, Jan. 18.

If convicted, he could face a maximum sentence of up to eight years in state prison.

The arraignment, a formal reading of the charges against the defendant, will present the accused with an opportunity to enter a plea.

An arraignment is not a trial. It isn’t even a preliminary hearing. Legally, the defendant is innocent until proven guilty.

Orlando Bruce Bosley, of Westminster, 57, has been charged with three counts: rape by duress or menace, rape by use of drugs and rape of an unconscious person.

Bosley is currently out on $100,000 bail. According to the Orange County Superior Court Web site, Bosley is being represented by the Public Defender’s Office.

According to the Seal Beach Police Department, on July 6, 2010, a 46-year-old woman took a cab from Sunset Beach to Seal Beach Leisure World.

According to the Orange County District Attorney’s Office, the woman—who is being referred to as “Jane Doe”—called “A White & Yellow Cab, Inc.” for a ride after having drinks in Sunset Beach.

According to the DA’s Office, she was intoxicated when the cab driver took her to a Leisure World residence that belongs to a family member.

Police say she woke up the next morning in Leisure World with no recollection of what happened previously.

According to the SBPD, an examination of the woman and the Leisure World apartment indicated she had been “sexually assaulted.” Seal Beach investigators ultimately identified Bosley as the cab driver. He was arrested on Nov. 23.

Although Bosley is legally presumed innocent, on Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2011, the DA’s Office issued a press release asking the public to help identify any other victims of sexual assault by Bosley.

“Depending on the circumstances of the crime, it is not unusual for the District Attorney’s Office or investigating police department to seek potential additional victims in sexual assault cases,” said Farrah Emami.
