Crime Log: Lifeguards treat 21 stingrays at summer’s start

Seal Beach Lifeguards performed 56 rescues, responded to 11 medical aid calls and treated 21 stingray injuries between June 15 and June 21, according to Marine Safety Chief Joe Bailey’s June 25 report to the city manager.

“The first week of summer was busy with final preparations for full deployment, Jr. Lifeguards, and swim lessons.  The surf was small and the wind was blowing for most of the week,” Bailey wrote.

Marine Safety (Lifeguard) staff were busy training during the week, Bailey said.

“The Marine Safety Department also held a personal watercraft rescue course for a select group of Lifeguards.  The pool lifeguards participated in an in-service day which includes certification in CPR, pool rules, how to back board a victim of a spinal injury, and a refresher on how to teach swim lessons,” Bailey said.

The Junior Lifeguard program began at 9 a.m., Monday, June 25.  “The program has expanded to 300 kids for the 2012 season.  We were expecting around 250 kids and we were happily surprised with the increased turnout.  The large turnout has caused a scramble to get enough uniforms and supplies for the participants, however we were able to cover the increase,” Bailey said.
