Crime Log: Car burglaries dominate Belmont Shore’s September crime report

There were 18 successful car burglaries and one attempted car burglary in Long Beach’s affluent Belmont Shore neighborhood last month, according to information compiled by Jeff Miller of the Belmont Shore Residents Association. While Belmont Shore is located in Long Beach, it is linked to the Old Town area of Seal Beach by a bridge on Pacific Coast Highway. The reported car burglaries occurred between Sept. 2 and 24. Most took place in the late afternoon or at night. Only five occurred before noon and one of those car burglaries took place at midnight. There were also eight burglaries of homes or residential garages in Belmont Shore last month. There were eight petty thefts and two grand thefts reported as well. Unfortunately, while property crimes dominated the Belmont Shore blotter there were some violent crimes. Police received reports of two assaults with a deadly weapon (neither involving guns) and two reports of battery. A single robbery was reported at 2:34 a.m., on Monday, Sept. 16, on the 100 block of S. 39th Place. Man arrested for cultivating a single marijuana plant in Los Al A Los Alamitos man was arrested in late September for cultivating marijuana when police found a single plant in his back yard. The 23-year-old man was arrested and booked for cultivating a marijuana plant in his yard on Saturday night, Sept. 28, according to Capt. Bruce McAlpine of the Los Alamitos Police Department. Officers responded at about 11:08 p.m. to a disturbance complaint about someone smoking marijuana on the 4300 block of Howard. The responding police unit discovereed that the man had a single plant in a 2 liter soft drink bottle. According to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department website, he was released without on his own recognizance the night of his arrest. The man then walked to the back alley. It appeared to the caller that the man was casing. Police unit M7 contacted the man. He was a delivery driver. No further police services were necessary. Wednesday, October 2 Hail By Citizen—1:34 a.m.—Ocean Avenue—A citizen flagged down police unit 207 and said that someone was trying to start a fire on the south side of the Seal Beach Pier. The officer did not find a fire. The officer did find three individuals and advised them of beach hours. Transient—7:08 a.m.—A Row Surfside Avenue—The caller reported that an individual who was apparently described as a transient was sleeping halfway between the jetty and Anderson. The caller said the individual had been sleeping there for the past two nights. Animal Information—7:36 a.m.—B Row Surfside Avenue—Police unit 107 contacted an individual with two dogs that were off leash. The officer advised that individual about the Seal Beach Municipal Code. Coyote—9:32 p.m.—Blue Heron—The caller reported seeing a three-member coyote pack in the park. Message delivered to Long Beach Animal Care Services. Thursday, October 3 Trash Digging—5:39 a.m.—Seal Way—The caller said a woman was digging through the trash cans at the location. Suspicious Occupied Vehicles—6:01 a.m.—Edinger Avenue—The caller saw a man in a van with headlights on, facing in the direction of Seal Beach Naval Weapons Station. The man turned the lights off as the caller drove by. The caller had reportedly seen the van at the location 100 times and it tends to leave at about 6:15 a.m. It turned out that police unit 141 had contacted the man in the van previously. The man in the van was there to watch coyotes. Police unit cancelled prior to arrival. Business Burglary Report—12:39 p.m.—Seal Beach Boulevard—The crime apparently occurred on Sept. 5. According to the caller, the suspect stole merchandise from several stores. Loss: six bottles of wine collectively valued at $371. Report taken. Friday, October 4 Petty Theft—8:25 a.m.—Seal Way—Someone stole a red, vintage Schwinn valued at $200 during the night. Found Property—7:06 p.m.—Ocean Avenue—The caller found a credit card belonging to someone else and turned it in to a police volunteer. Booked as found. Open Window—10:39 p.m.—Eighth Street—The caller said the neighbors’ window was broken or had been blown out by the wind. The caller reported hearing glass breaking 20 minutes prior to the call to the police. The neighbors were not home and the caller did not see any lights on inside the residence or garage. Police unit 241 checked. There were no signs of forced entry. It appeared to the officer that either an unknown object hit the window or the wind broke the glass. There was no evidence of a crime, so no further police services were necessary. Saturday, October 5 Transient—7:11 a.m.—Pacific Coast Highway—The caller said a man who was apparently described as a transient was sleeping on a bench in front of the business. Police unit 107 advised the man on the bench about the Seal Beach Municipal Code. Traffic Hazard—12:48 p.m.—Lampson Avenue and Seal Beach Boulevard—The caller said a large branch fell across traffic. A second caller put the branch closer to Old Ranch. The branch was reportedly in the number two lane. A message was delivered to Public Works. The lane was conned off. By 2:33 p.m., a Public Works employee reported that he had cleared the branch from the road. IN LEISURE WORLD Wednesday, October 2 Trespassing—9:22 a.m.—El Dorado Drive, Mutual Unknown—The caller said a former caregiver was found in a room with a strong odor of marijuana. The former caregiver had been advised not to come back. Security escorted the former caregiver out. Report taken. Friday, October 4 Disturbance, Mechanical—6:02 a.m. —Blume Drive—The caller said a class has been starting at Rush Park at 5:30 a.m. every day and the participants are extremely loud. The caller said the park doesn’t open until 7 a.m. The caller asked the Orange County Sheriff’s Department to have a deputy advise the class not to start until 7 a.m. Disturbance—2:27 p.m.—Bradbury Road—A deputy performed a patrol check for a vehicle that was reportedly blowing stop signs and almost calling traffic collisions. The driver, a man, was seen pulling to the curb to yell at a woman. The woman was last seen walking on Montecito Road, south of Bradbury. A Los Alamitos man was arrested in late September for cultivating marijuana when police found a single plant in his back yard.
