City plans memorial for victims

The Seal Beach City Council approved $30,000 on Monday, Feb. 27, to hire a professional service to design a memorial to the memory of the eight lives lost during the Oct. 12, 2011 shootings at the Salon Meritage.

According to Assistant City Manager Sean Crumby’s report on the Memorial Committee, the preferred site would be Eisenhower Park. The park overlooks the ocean and was described in the Crumby report as a serene setting.

Families of the victims did not want a ground-breaking or ribbon-cutting ceremony to be held on the first anniversary of the tragedy. They also opposed having the memorial near the location of the event.

The families did not want the monument named after the Salon Meritage.

Crumby told the council that staff plans for a spring 2013 opening ceremony for the memorial
